Finally
somebody though of this; a parachute for Drones!
ParaZero,
a start-up specializes in developing protection systems for drones, has
developed the SafeAir, a parachute fro drones as reported in “Watch a
parachute rescue a drone in free fall”, published May 9 2016 by Jon Fingas,
Engadget.
Here's
the video showing how the SafeAir, which is short for SafeAir Pyrotechnic
Parachute Recovery Solution, works.
The
SafeAir is attached to the underside of your drone as noted in “Save
your drone from an expensive fall with this mini parachute”, published May
6, 2016 by James Vincent, The Verge.
It
automatically deploys when the devices built in modular SoC (System on a Chip)
microntroller, which has a processor, memory store and accelerometer, detects
that the engine has stopped making noise and the drone is in freefall
The
SafeAir works with all size drones, from 2 Kg to 330 kg as show on their
website
ParaZero
isn't perfect, it really slows down the drone after deployment to around a
velocity of 3 m/s to 6 m/s, even at low altitudes. The result of months of
previous research going back as far as March 2015, this isn’t much progress as
6 m/s is still pretty fast and will hurt anyone it lands on.
Also,
the SafeAir adds a little bulk to the drone which will impact on the battery
life. No cost is shown on the ParaZero website, but hopefully it'll cost a lot
less than the drone and allow you to recover your precious unscathed.
