Motorola Xoom vs the Apple iPad 2 - Elizabeth Taylor, All's Well that Ends Well

Fortune never seems so blind as to those upon whom she has bestowed no favours.
La Rochefoucauld, Maxima, 391

The appearance of the Motorola Xoom!

Finally! A tribute worthy to be dedicated to the legendary silver screen Goddess and Cleopatra, worthy of Harper’s Bazaar and the movie Cleopatra (1963) as spoken of in the obituary in the article “Elizabeth Taylor dies at 79; legendary actress”, published March 23, 2011, 9:05 p.m. by Elaine Woo, Los Angeles Times. She passed in the Afterlife on Wednesday March 23rd 2011 AD.

To her Dame Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor (February 27 1932 AD - March 23, 2011 AD), I wish to dedicate this article, as like her, the Motorola Xoom has great specs. Dame Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor  shadow that graced many a Broadway and illuminated countless Silver Screen movies will have Broadways ephemeral lights dimmed in her honour this Friday March 25th 2011 AD as stated in the article Broadway to dim lights for Elizabeth Taylor” , published Thursday March 24, 2011 7:37pm EDT, Reuters. .

With the gift of my blog article as tribute upon her Egyptian Funeral pyre, may the God Anubis, Guardian of the Underworld welcome you on your journey to Hades, with the fickle feline demi-god Bastet for companionship.

But the show must go on, Broadway Style. The much advertised, much glorified as the ultimate Tablet since the Days of the Egyptians. Also much pilloried in my blog article entitled “Apple iPad, PC Makers and Battery Life - Lost in Space and the AppleByte” for its poor battery life and lack of a Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11n) option.

Despite its Google Android OS 3.0 aka Honeycomb Threads, its hefty price tag of US$600 on a two (2) year contract with US$800 for the privilege of outright purchase as stated in the article “Verizon: Xoom Tablet to cost US$800, or US$600 with two-year contract”, published Tuesday February 22 2011 by Ben Patterson, Technology Blogger, Yahoo News made it like one of the Untouchables in the Indian Caste system.

For a Tablet? Really Motorola!?

More salt was rubbed into the wound when Motorola decided to do a recall of the Tablet so as to enable the LTE (Long Term Evolution) chipsets in the Tablet, rumoured to take six (6) day to complete and return to the owner as stated in the article “Xoom 4G Upgrade could take more than Six Days”, published Friday February 25th 2011, by PCWorld via Yahoo News.

Really Motorola? Really!!!

Since February 2011, Motorola, after getting a beating for trying to spring a fast one on the Apple iPad 2 by launching a day before Apple’s launch on Friday February 11th 2011AD, has come to their senses.

They at least appear to be following the bad press and taking their advice in their chase after the white whale called the Apple iPad 2.

Motorola have made good by launching a Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11n) version for US$599 as stated in the article “Wi-Fi Motorola Xoom matches the iPad2 - US$599 at several Retailers”, published Wednesday February 16 2011 by Digital Trends via Yahoo News.

They have also improved their Distribution Network, with Amazon, Best Buy, CostCo, Staples, Walmart, RadioShack and Sams’s Club locations being in on the deal as stated in the article “Hard Sell for Motorola's Xoom Wi-Fi Tablet”, published March 16, 2011, 8:11am PT 12 By Kevin C. Tofel, GigaOM . Defiantly a copy of Apple Inc!

Coupled with a worldwide Developer push for the Honeycomb Tablet, the next six (6) months will be interesting. All bets are on Google Android 3.0 aka Honeycomb to repeat the victory of its sister Google Android 2.2 aka Froyo, now crowing history as documented in the article “Android is no. 1 OS, but Apple, RIM rule devices”, published March 4, 2011 9:08 AM PST by Lance Whitney, Google Android - CNET News and supported by the article “Android pulls ahead in smartphone Race, Report says”, published March 3, 2011, 6:44 PM By NICK BILTON, NY Times.

Improve the battery life to match the Apple iPad 2 continuing romp past the 12.6 hour goalpost on full HD Video usage would be the ultimate finish touch, as 9.6 hours is just not cutting it as reported in the article “CNET tests Tablet Web speed, battery life”, published March 6, 2011 11:59 AM PST by Eric Franklin, Crave - CNET News. Ditto too on the weight, which is a bit too heavy for on the go computing.

Truly, All's Well that Ends Well, Shakespeare Style!
