LG Electronics purchases WebOS from HP to develope its line of Internet Connected TV's - HP's The Great Gatsby as The Wolverine of Streaming TV rises

“It creates a new path for LG to offer an intuitive user experience and Internet services across a range of consumer electronics devices”

Quote from Skott Ahn, President and Chief Technology Officer of LG Electronics Inc as reported in CNET dated February 25, 2013 at MWC 2013

Open Source’s march is apparently that of an unstoppable Juggernaut.

This as Open Source is now appears set to revolutionize the Television World as LG Electronics out of South Korea has decided to develop a line of Smart TV based on Open Source WebOS Platform as reported in “HP licenses acquired from Palm”, published February 25, 2013 6:02 AM PST by Roger Cheng, CNET News.

Mobile Streaming Smart TV anyone?

This development comes as no surprise, as LG Electronics had been toying with the idea of using WebOS for TV as reported in “LG at work on WebOS-based HDTV”, report says, published October 25, 2012 8:00 AM PDT by Don Reisinger, CNET News.

HP has apparently sold WebOS for an undisclosed sum of Gold (or is it platinum?) bricks to LG Electronics, a well-respected TV maker,  the following portfolio of WebOS products as described in “HP Frees Itself Of webOS, Unloading It To LG”, published February 25th, 2013 by Dan Rowinski, ReadWrite:

1.      Source Code
2.      Documentation
3.      Websites
4.      Employees of the Division responsible for building and maintaining WebOS

HP will still control Cloud Storage and Support for Apps for WebOS.  Which is just as well as LG is a component and Household Appliance Maker, not a Cloud computing Company. HP will also keep its App Store and Updating Services for the Cloud Storage and Apps. Apparently, there still money in the intellectual property of Apps and Cloud Computing, making LG business-dependent on HP Cloud Storage.

Open Source revolutionizing the Mobile smartphone World as can be seen from the announcements coming out of the week long MWC 2013 (Mobile World Conference) that began on February 25th 2013 as stated in my blog article entitled “MWC 2013 reveals Firefox OS & Tizen OS launching Second & Third Quarter 2013 respectively - Samsung's Despicable Me 2 & Mozilla practices The ABC’s of Death”.

The story of HP’s past is well documented and even given mention in my article on HP going Android for Tablets as noted in blog article entitled “HP's 7 Slate 7 Tablet debuts at MWC 2013, set to launch April 2013 - LiMo Open Source is RedBull as it Gives HP Wings Beyond the Hills”, which admittedly they should have done sooner.

Notwithstanding, WebOS resurrection via this HP deal is an excellent opportunity to expand on the idea of the Connected Streaming TV concept. No doubt Streaming TV with hardware made by LG and Cloud support for HP’s Tablets and smartphones is in the works as described in as noted in my blog article entitled “HP's 7 Slate 7 Tablet debuts at MWC 2013, set to launch April 2013 - LiMo Open Source is RedBull as it Gives HP Wings Beyond the Hills”.

This development marks LG’s increased push into Mobile Computing, fitting in nicely with its growing portfolio of smartphones as mentioned in “LG's 4K phone upscaling squeezes Ultra HD from your mobile, wirelessly (video)”, published February 27, 2013 7:53 AM PST, CNET News.

One thing is certain though: HP's The Great Gatsby (2013) as LG, The Wolverine (2013) of Streaming TV rises. Stay tuned for more as these story develops.
