Structur3D Printing debuts Kickstarter for Discov3ry 3D Printer – Expand Imaginations Horizons with a Printer that Prints with any material

“Discov3ry expands what is possible with virtually every 3D printer already out there, allowing for more creativity than ever before in 3D printing. We are excited to get it into the hands of the maker community to envision even more imaginative and ingenious applications.”

CEO and co-founder of Structur3D Printing, Dr. Charles Mire, commenting on their latest product the Discov3ry 3D Printer Extruder

3D Printers are a new innovation these days. They enable the right brained among us to really get creative and print in a medium that expands the horizons of imagination into the third dimension.
Problem is, the material for printing in that medium is restricted to Plastics. Then on Tuesday June 10th 2014 that all changed when Structured Ontario, Canada-based Structur3D Printing launched their 3D Printer Extruder add on, the US$299 Discov3ry 3D Printer Extruder. The company’s founders aren’t exactly managers and are in fact scientists….and a rather scruffy lot too:

1.      Dr. Charles Mire, a Chemist
2.      Mr. Andrew Finkle, a Chemical Engineer
3.      Mr. John Mardlin, Mathematician and Mechanical Engineer

The Discov3ry 3D Printer Extruder is compatible with any 3D Printer currently on the market and expands your options with the ability to print in any other medium as described in “3D-print with Nutella: Paste extruder takes on Play-Doh, icing”, published June 10, 2014 11:12 AM PDT by Amanda Kooser, CNET News and “Structur3D Printing Launches First Universal Paste Extruder to Print With Various Materials”, published June 10th 2014, Marketwired.
The funding round for this project closes on Tuesday, July 15th 2014 3:00 PM EST. as of Thursday June 19th 2014 at 5:30pm, 321 backers have pledged US$85,074 and have already surpassed the US$30,000 goal. With only twenty five (25) days to go until the deadline, this project is already a success based the pledge breakdown:

1.      100 backers have pledged more than US$289
2.      66 backers have pledged more than US$249
3.      63 backers have pledged more than US$299
4.      33 backers have pledged more than US$333

The Discov3ry 3D Printer Extruder will begin shipping in October 2014. Not a bad start for a printer that can print in food!

The Discov3ry 3D Printer – Expand Imaginations horizons with a Printer that uses any material

The Discov3ry 3D Printer Extruder, unlike its low-end counterpart the US$300 M3D Micro 3D Printer as described in my blog article entitled “US$300 M3D Micro 3D Printer for the Masses coming in March 2015 – HP may rise to challenge this Kickstarter to the Iron 3D Printing Throne”, is a universal add-on device that enables your current 3D Printer to print in materials other than ABS (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene), the plastic material that makes LEGO or PLA (Polylactide).

In fact, according to the Discov3ry 3D Printer Extruder Kickstarter Page, you can print in virtually any material that's extrudable:

1.      Clay
2.      Play dough
3.      Wood filler
4.      Silicone
5.      Chocolate
6.      Cake frosting
7.      Fondant
8.      Cookie dough
9.      Meringue

Anyone from pastry chefs to Teachers will find this multi-material capable Discov3ry 3D Printer Extruder a value purchase, as with that capability, it can make 3D Printing an educational experience. 3D Shapes that you could only imagine or make using complicated paper construction cut-outs you can now print after a few design strokes and at the press of a button in any extrudable material desired.

Design Engineers will especially love the fact that it can print in Silicone, opening up the possibility of printing Biomedical Prosthetics that are designed and tailor-made specific to the patient. Best of all is the price, which at US$299 is competitively priced and can be seen as a value buy alongside the US$300 M3D Micro 3D Printer, another Kickstarter that’s getting rave reviews for its affordability in this new Printing Paradigm.

Interested in this printer that’s a part of the new Trend I’d predicted as far back as 2013 as stated in my blog article entitled “Tech Predictions of 2013 - 3D Printing and smaller smartphones”?
