Google
Glass is coming back, but not how you might expect.
The
new Google Glass, dubbed Google Glass 2.0, is set to comeback as EE (Enterprise
Edition) to cater to Enterprise customers as reported in the article “The
Next Google Glass Will Focus on the Enterprise”, published July 4, 2015 by
David Nield, Digitaltrends.
The
XE (Explorer Edition) wasn't a success and that programme got scuppered in
January 2015 due to lack of interest because of its controversial uses and high
price tag.
But
as I'd noted in my blog article
entitled “@googleglass
Explorer Program ends – Google Glass going Enterprise as Cheaper Version coming
against Microsoft Hololens” it had already drawn a lot of commercial
interest from the US Military and Medical Doctors who already find the product
useful as a wearable reference computer.
This
latest report suggests that Google is ramping up to produce what can be dubbed
as the second coming of the Google Glass. New staff hires have been noted that
are related to Google Glass, suggesting that these Enterprise customer want
Glass in large quantities.
Whispers
online hinted at Google partnering with Intel as a new processor partner to
replace Texas Instruments in a bid to have a steady supply of mobile Processors
and also to make Google Glass a low-powered thinner device as I'd predicted in my
blog article
entitled “Google
Glass with Intel Chips - US$199 Google Glass Plus coming as Intel Core M 14nm
Processor shrinks Battery for US Army and Medical Doctor Demand”.
Google
Glass 2.0 will therefore look like a pair of ordinary glasses, finally!
Google Glass coming to
Enterprise users - Partnership with Ubeam to make batteries smaller
Their
latest patent filing also hint at a much thinner product that hopefully will
also ditch that huge battery for a much smaller one.
A
possible solution could be the use of Ultrasonic power transfer to power Google
Glass by licensing the technology from Meredith Perry's Ubeam startup as
explained in my blog
article entitled “Meredith
Perry's Ubeam Ultrasonic Power Transfer and the Venture Capitalists - Ubeam's
Wireless Charging Future is a Good Vibration with a Magnetic Personality”.
That
way, the Google Glass could share the power from the smartphone that the individual
wearing their Google Glass has in their pocket. This is now possible thanks to
the fact that the most recently released smartphones have a USB 3.1 Type-C
Connector, which allows you to use your smartphone as a source of power.
Google
merely has to work with Ubeam to make a USB 3.1 Type-C Connector device that
converts that battery power to ultrasonic waves and design a Ubeam/Google
ultrasonic receiver in Google Glass to keep the device powered while the
persons works.
Google
Glass, dear reader, is far from dead.
And
yes, all bets are still on for Google Glass replacing the smartphone as I’d
predicted in my blog
article entitled “Google
Glass Designer Isabelle Olsson puts Leopard frames on Google Glass - Smart +
Sexy = Smexy glasses Katy Perry Roar for Tablet and smartphone Extinction”.
Google Gearing up for
VR in 2016 - Personal PC beginnings for smartphone replacements
In
fact, Google Glass will introduce AR to Google Android smartphones in much the
same way Android Wear’s latest updates make smartwatches an extension of your
smartphone’s functionality as pointed out in my Geezam
blog article entitled “Google
updates Android Wear before the Apple Watch Deliveries on April 24th 2015”.
The
only difference now is that we have a wave of VR (Virtual Reality) and AR
(Augmented Reality) products coming from new competitors as reported in my blog article
entitled “@Oculus
Mobile VR Jam 2015 - How @samsung Gear VR is Gearing up for Competition in the
VR and AR Space”.
Microsoft
Hololens, Sony Morpheus VR Headgear, Samsung Gear VR and the HTC Vive VR
Headgear are just the beginning of a bigger wave of VR Headgear coming in 2016.
We might even begin to see “White Label” VR Headset coming from China that copy
the functionality of these more expensive headsets capable of working on any
smartphone.
Google
knows that other hardware Developers are out there and is alledgedly developing
a Google Android specifically for VR to jumpstart the industry, which is
expected to be big by 2016 as reported in my blog article
entitled “@google
to develope Google @Android for VR - Why a VR and AR War is looming on the Horizon
in 2016”.
If
Google is really pushing Google Glass into the Enterprise World because of
demand, it stands a better chance of proliferating to regular customers. These
large Enterprise customers have employees that will use the technology in their
field of work.
Once
they get comfortable with the technology, they'll become evangelists to family
and friends and gradually the product will become popular with regular customers
in much the same way the personal computer got its start.
Google Glass and Video
Gaming – AR in the Real World as VR’s the new Console
As
the technology improves and Google Glass begins to look more like an ordinary
pair of glasses, I'm predicting that they'll become an AR competitor to
Microsoft Hololens. They'll become Google’s challenger in the AR field.
VR
seems set to become the next replacement for Video Gaming Consoles by 2017 with
early signs being shows at the E3 (Electronics Entertainment Expo) as explained
in the article “The
biggest video game conference of the year is becoming the virtual reality show”,
published June 13, 2015, by Ian Sherr, CNET News.
As
for VR, the script is yet to be written as we'll know how it all shakes down by
2016.
