NetMarketshare Browser Stars for June 2015 – How Explorer and Safari are winning the Browser Wars

Internet Explorer, surprisingly is still the top desktop Browser.

But Google Chrome plays a great second fiddle to the Microsoft browser and even manages to expand on its marketshare, to the disadvantage of Mozilla Firefox.

So say the stats from analyst NetMarketshare, which paints a very interesting yet familiar picture of the Desktop browsing world.



By contrast, the Mobile and Tablet World is still dominated by Apple’s Safari as shown below.



So what explains these disparities in Browser love from the desktop crowd, which does seem to have changed since April 2014 as noted in my blog article entitled “NetMarketShare Second Quarter Stats show Windows XP Growing Strong while Google Chrome in No. 2 Spot - Windows 7 Upgrade Windfall for Computer Repair Technicians”?

In June 2015, NetMarketshare records the following stats for Google Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer:

Google Chrome

1.      26.3 % of Global Web traffic in May 2015
2.      27.2 % of Global Web traffic in June 2015
3.      19.3 % of Global Web traffic in June 2014

Mozilla Firefox

1.      12 % of Global Web traffic in May 2015
2.      11.8 % of Global Web traffic in June 2015
3.      15.5 % of Global Web traffic in June 2014

Internet Explorer

1.      57.8 % of Global Web traffic in May 2015
2.      58.1 % of Global Web traffic in June 2015

Internet Explorer is popular as it comes pre-built into Microsoft Windows. Even the latest version of Internet Explorer, called Microsoft Edge comes bake into the latest OS Windows 10.

This caused Mozilla to complain and then launch an updated version of Mozilla Firefox as reported in the article “Firefox tries to edge out Microsoft in Windows 10 browser battle”, published August 12, 2015 by Lance Whitney, CNET News.

So the dominance of Microsoft on the desktop doesn't look like its changing anytime soon. The picture is a different in the smartphone and tablet arena, which surprisingly is dominated by Safari.

For the month of July 2015 the stats break down as follows:

1.      42.22 % of Global Web traffic for Safari 
2.      33.24 % of Global Web traffic for Google Chrome 
3.      12.86 % of Global Web traffic for Android Browser 
4.      11.68 % of Global Web traffic for Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer is in the bottom of the pile along with other third party browsers, as albeit it’s baked into most Windows Phone smartphones, their marketshare is very small compared to Apple iOS and Google Android. The three (3) dominant browsers are those that come pre-installed in their respective smartphone, namely the very popular Apple iPhone.

My conclusion is based on the latest stats from analyst Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, the Apple iPhone and the Apple iPhone 6 Plus in the First Quarter of 2015 as reported in my blog article entitled “Apple iPhone 6 ahead in Q1 of 2015 based on @K_Worldpanel Stats - Phablets are hot as Apple Watch Summer Storm coming”.

So it’s most likely the result of the growing popularity of the phablet-sized Apple iPhone 6 and Apple iPhone 6 Plus as described in my Geezam blog article entitled “Apple iPhone 6 and Plus with 128GB Storage and Apple Pay is Biggest iPhone Launch” followed by the Google Android smartphones in a close race for American Marketshare.

So the lesson is clear; make your own Operating System and product, be it smartphone, Tablet or computer and once popular over time, the world will beat a path to your browser!
