Professor Dr. Roel van de Krol develops Artificial Photosynthesis using Bismuth Vanadate coated Solar Panels

“Basically, we combined the best of both worlds. We start with a chemically stable, low cost metal Oxide, add a really good but simple silicon-based thin film Solar cell, and -- voilĂ  -- we've just created a cost-effective, highly stable, and highly efficient Solar fuel device”

Prof. Dr. Roel van de Krol, head of the HZB Institute for Solar Fuels on the development of Artificial Photosynthesis using Bismuth Vanadate (BiVO4) coated Solar Panels

Photosynthesis is a process by which plants take Solar Radiation and use it to convert Carbon diOxide and Water into Glucose, with Oxygen as the by-product. Earlier in March 2013, Dr Michael Adams of the University of Georgia’s Bio-Energy Systems Research Institute and his team were able to successfully bio-engineer a bacterium, Pyrococcusfuriosus, to convert atmospheric CO2 into Bio-fuel as stated in my blog article entitled “Pyrococcusfuriosus Bacterium Bio-engineered by University of Georgia’s to convert Carbon DiOxide to Bio-fuel - Carbon Sequestering profitable  Hunger Games Catching Fire”.

Now we’re getting close with the recent development of a Solar System that can use Solar Radiation to convert Water into Hydrogen and Oxygen in a more efficient form of Electrolysis called Artificial Photosynthesis as described in “The best of two worlds: Solar hydrogen production breakthrough”, published Jul 29, 2013, Phys.org.

It’s pretty much the same as using Solar Panels to split water into Hydrogen and Oxygen. Under those conditions, the water chose is usually deionized water to reduce the formation of salts at the Anode (+) and Cathode (-), usually inert Platinum Electrodes. It differs in this case as the Anode and Cathode are instead on the surface of the Solar Panel. Also instead of being made of thin plates of platinum, the Anode is made of Bismuth Vanadate (BiVO4) coated with a protective coating of Cobalt Phosphate (CoPO4) catalyst with a Platinum wire Cathode.

A Graphite bridge is used to connect the Anode to the standard Solar Panel, which is made of the usual doped Silicon (Si) coated with protective Glass. The circuit is completed as shown below:

This improves the electrolysis process, as the Solar Panel is now in direct contact with the water instead of generating Electricity solely for the purpose of splitting Water. The Cobalt Phosphate (CoPO4) catalyst, which is sprayed onto the 300nm thick layer of Bismuth Vanadate (BiVO4), helps to improve the efficiency of the production of Oxygen at the Anode and protect the Solar Panel from corrosion, as it’s sprayed on as a very thin Nano-particulate layer.

In essence, this makes the Anode a Nano-Electrode. Wolfram Atoms or basically Nano-particles of Tungsten (W), being as Wolfram is an older name for the Transition Metal and the explanation for it’s symbol W as noted in Tungsten or Wolfram Facts, By Anne Marie Helmenstine, Ph.D, viewed August 27 2013, About.com.

Nano-particles of Tungsten (W) Atoms are added to make the Bismuth Vanadate (BiVO4) more reactive and reduce electron-proton charge recombination and more efficient flow of free electrons, to quote Professor Dr. Roel van de Krol: “What's important is that we distribute these wolfram atoms in a very specific way so that they can set up an internal electric field, which helps to prevent recombination”.

This impressive process only uses 5% of the total Electricity generates and can reach as high as 9%, leaving the other 95% for use to power the Electrical system of the house. Thanks to the new design using an Anode made of Bismuth Vanadate (BiVO4) coated with Cobalt Phosphate (CoPO4) catalyst.

In addition to this, 80% of the incident photons contribute to the Electricity generated, a record for any Oxide, to quote Professor Dr. Roel van de Krol: “We don't really understand quite yet why Bismuth Vanadate works so much better than other metal Oxides. We found that more than 80 percent of the incident photons contribute to the current, an unexpectedly high value that sets a new record for metal Oxides”.

Thus the Hydrogen produced at the Platinum Cathode can be stored and used in Hydrogen Fuel Cells to provide power at night, in a sense paving the way to eliminating batteries to store Electricity even as it powers the house. This as the 5%-9% of Electrical Energy stored as Hydrogen Gas can be reused at night or on cloud days, for which the problem of storing Hydrogen Gas becomes a problem.

To give you an idea what this means in practical terms, 600W per square meter, which is the average Power generated by Solar Panels in Germany’s translates to 60 KW of power generated from 100 square meter Solar Panels of which 5% is 3 KW of power, enough to split hydrogen which when stored can be accessed during the night or on very cloudy day via a Hydrogen Fuel cell or used directly for Heating and Cooking.

Ironically, scientists here in Jamaica at the University of Technology and the University of the West Indies are working on, but with the intention to replace imported LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) Cooking Cylinders as explained in my blog article entitled “UTECH partners with GOJ and UWI to develope Hydrogen Cooking Gas Cylinders - EU Funded 3 Year Project is Chasing Mavericks to push Jamaica into the Hydrogen-Electron Economy”.

Most likely the platinum Electrodes may be a fine gauze mesh of platinum instead of the thin sheets normally used so as to allow the sunlight to pass through. Or even better, it may be the same plates of platinum but instead sprayed on a Glass plate, making this still a very expensive Electrolysis process.

Possibly this can be replaced with a Glass plate with sprayed on Nano-particles of Platinum or Silver to create a Glass Electrode. This would allow the Solar Panels to thus function by being place flat like regular Solar Panels and allowing the water to flow over its surface via gravity fed water source with the Hydrogen formed being collected.

Such a process is truly a breakthrough, as it makes the production of Hydrogen Gas for use in Fuel Cells or other forms of Energy Storage very efficient using a minimum of Electricity generated and improved Electrodes. Thus it is with in mind that I’d recommend collaboration between Professor Dr. Roel van de Krol of the HZB Institute for Solar Fuels as well as the lecturers at the University of the West Indies and the University of Technology.

Leap Motion Controller went live on Monday July 22 2013 - How a Theremin Computer Device revives PC sales as Everything is Possible to be controlled by Voice and Motion

The Leap Motion Controller, made by Leap Motion, a 3D Motion Capture Technology company, is a viable alternative to Microsoft’s Kinect but built for PC and Laptops began shipping its 3D Motion Controller device on July 22nd 2013 as stated in the article “Leap Motion aims to get a running start”, published June 24, 2013 10:00 AM PDT by Daniel Terdiman, CNET News.

Leap Motion’s CEO Michael Buckwald sees this technology replacing the Mouse in much the same way I’ve predicted that Capacitive Touch Screen devices such as Tablet and smartphones heralded its death as stated in my Geezam blog article entitled “How the Apple iPad killed Ultrabooks, Printing and the Mouse as the World Rediscovers Tablets”.

But depending on who you talk to, some say it’s the Mouse Killer and some say it’s a little too ahead of its time as opined in the article “Leap Motion: Huge Disappointment Or Simply Ahead Of Its Time?”, published 7/26/2013 @ 6:07PM by Matthew Butter, Forbes Magazine. But it’s my belief that it may mark the Revival of the PC.

This as it’s in the same league as the Microsoft Kinect and may end up finding uses in the same fields, such as in Medicine for surgeons to do operations or Doctors to be trained on new Surgical procedures as stated in my blog article entitled “Microsoft Kinect used to Teach Aneurysm Surgical procedures - A Gross Anatomy Future controlled by Voice and Gestures”.

But it has all the newness and uncertainty of a similar device from Indiegogo crowdfunded startup Interaxion named the Muse Mind Controller as described in my blog article entitled “Interaxion debut US$199 Muse Mind Controller at Le Web in France - Future Silver Lining Playbook for Gaming that'll Exercise the Windmills of Your Mind”.

And that makes it all the more exciting!

The Leap Motion Controller certainly has a lot of support for a device that’s mainly geared at PC, Laptops and some Tablets. Nearly 10,000 Developers signed up to develop Apps for the Airspace App Store to be used on Windows and Apple Mac OS PC’s.

AirSpace is now bubbleing at 100 Apps and the Developers appear to be enticed by the possibility of accessing some US$25 million in VC (Venture Capital) Funding from Leap’s financier, Highland Capital Partners as stated in the article “Leap Fund offers $25 million for Leap Motion developers”, published June 20, 2013 1:06 PM PDT by Daniel Terdiman, CNET News.

Possibly this device, though innovative and capable of being used on any device that has a USB Port unlike the Microsoft Kinect that’s restricted to the Xbox as stated in my blog article entitled “Nintendo Wii vs Microsoft Kinect - War of the Worlds in Jodine Spark's BattleField”, may be in for a rough time.

The Leap Motion Controller uses IR (InfraRed) to allow the user to do the same things as the Mouse or Capacitive Touch Screen can do with millimeter precision that’ll appeal mainly to Graphic Artist. Like Capacitive Touch Screen PC, Laptop or Tablet, it faces ergonomic problems related to aches and pains of having your hand outstretched so long. Not a very comfortable posture to assume for several hours around you PC, Laptop or Tablet!

I can’t imagine it being used in smartphones, as already a few smartphones makers such as Samsung, have their version of 3D Motion Capture technology or Gesture Control built into their smartphones. Even Apple has plans for some form of their own integrated 3D Motion Capture Technology but geared mainly at smartphones.

Asus has also joined the Leap Motion party in January 2013 as stated in “Leap Motion Control tech to be bundled with Asus PCs”, published January 3, 2013 5:00 AM PST by Daniel Terdiman, CNET News to have the device bundled with their PC, Laptops and Tablets. To further their presence in the market, Leap Motion later cemented deals with HP (Hewlett Packard) in April 2013 as stated in “Leap Motion strikes bundling, embedding deal with HP”, published April 16, 2013 7:45 AM PDT by Daniel Terdiman, CNET News.

This action by Leap motion gives me great hope for Leap Motion’s long term Leap into the future, pun not really intended, but there it is!

Clearly, the Leap Motion Controller is geared at PC (Personal Computers), Laptops and Tablets with the intent to make us look a lot like Tony Stark from Iron Man. Thus their best bet at success is to make a case for their device reviving the decline in PC Sales as stated in “PCs suffer longest sales decline in history”, published 11:50PM BST 10 Jul 2013 by Andrew Trotman, The UK Telegraph and “The PC fights back: U.S. sales decline is slowing”, published Jul 15, 2013 3:00 AM by Brad Chacos, PCWorld to the various Computer Manufacturers.

Then they need to get them to agree to have the Leap Motion Controller embedded into their PC, Laptops and Tablets, thus securing their market and boosting Developer support, as they’ll rally towards developing for a platform that showing signs of renewed growth.

The biggest prize lies in Wearable Tech, Consumer Household Electronics and Automobiles. Google Glass isn’t the only game in town as it relates to Wearable computers as stated in “A LOOK AT ALL THE GOOGLE GLASS COMPETITORS IN DEVELOPMENT”, published August 22, 2013 By Simon Hill, Digital Trends presenting an opportunity for Leap Motion to license their technology to enable Air Gesture base controls on such devices.

Full Autonomous Cars such as those being tested by Volvo in the EU (European Project) SARTRE as described in my blog article entitled “Volvo Testing Autonomous Motor Vehicles in Spain in Live Traffic - EU Project SARTRE adds self-driving AI with smartphone Control” could be capable of being driven by gesture alone.

This as such a car, most likely an All-Electric Vehicle, would probably use a smartphone to unlock the doors and control its onboard AI (Artificially Intelligent). Thus in like manner, the means by which it drives will require no steering wheel when in automatic mode and only needs Air Gestures from the driver to control its general direction with the AI doing most of the driving.

Similarly too, they can also market their tech to makers of Consumer Household Electronics to enable Gesture based control on devices as diverse as:

1.      Televisions
2.      Refrigerators
3.      Kitchen Appliances
4.      Washing Machines
5.      Home Entertainment Systems

But even more innovative, Leap Motion can also work with PC Manufacturers and Game Console Designers to develop a whole line of computers that simply have no mouse or other form of input other than the Leap Motion Controller. No keyboard no mouse, just Air Gestures to use their computer, effectively a Theremin Computer i.e. a computer controlled via Gestures only.

If Leap Motion does this, then by 2015 they’ll fulfill my prediction of a World where Everything is Possible and is controlled by our Voice and Motion as prognosticated in my Geezam blog article entitled “Siri and Kinect: Heralds of a coming world free of Remote Controls”.

How to make US Dollars as Freelance Web Content or Blog Affiliate Writer Online in Jamaica using your Scotia VISA Debit Card or Credit Card

An opportunity awaits the independent writer of content to write, publish and promote their own e-books in PDF as described in my blog article entitled “How to Create PDF Documents using PDFCreator” and e-pub format especially as Tablets and e-Readers are set to become very popular among High School and UWI (University of the West Indies) students in the Fourth Quarter of 2013 and beyond.

You can then choose to self-publish and then market your e-pub book by uploading it to a Cloud Drive and then creating a link to your book to be post it all over Social Media e.g. Facebook Profile Page, Twitter Account or on your blog or website as described in my blog article entitled “How to use Dropbox, Google Drive and Sound File Sharing Websites to Share and Promote your Content online - Sharing is Caring”:

1.      Social Media i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, YouTube
2.      Email

16.  Reggae Pickney
17.  SALISES
18.  SunZone
19.  The Mill Press
20.  Twin Guinep
21.  University of the West Indies Press

Finding the addresses of the above local publishers is as simple as using Google or the Jamaica Yellow Pages, though you must be aware that different publishers have different requirements of authors of original work.

Marketing your book takes awhile, though, even with the power of Social Networking. Whether you choose to market the book yourself, go to one of the local publisher or even a big International Publisher and Seller of Books such as Amazon or Barnes and Noble, it won’t happen overnight.

Worst case scenario, it may take at least 2 years and several published book later before you’ll get any good traction for your published book, be it in e-pub, paperback or Hardcover format. Like a blog or website, a book marketed via the above mentioned still requires the follows as stated in the article “5 Tips for Creating Traffic Driving Blog Posts”, published July 15, 2013 by Brianna Smith, Social Media Today:

1.      Make sure you choose the type of book you wish to publish and writer you wish to become, be it a fiction or non-fiction. Remember to be flexible and try your hand at both fields and not restrict yourself
2.      Use Pictures and even interactive videos in your e-book. Remember your e-book is being read on an e-reader or Tablet, so integrating Videos into your e-book makes it more engaging
3.      Write an Attention Grabbing Subject Line
4.      Post the link for your e-book frequently on Social Media
5.      Publish books frequently. Don't just publish one book and stop writing. Publish short stories and article in the meantime
6.      Adding your personal insight to your book i.e. your personal experiences, helps your book connect better with your target audience
7.      Engage your fans via link to download your e-book, sign up for alerts when you'll publish another book

If you publish your book on a website or blog, it’ll have to get a lot of traffic. Aside from the above mentioned methods, there is also registering with Blog Search Engines and Blog Aggregators, basically logs detailed listings or Directories of blogs in various Categories as listed in the articles “23 Blog Directories To Submit Your Blog To” published November 20, 2007 by Loren Baker, SearchEngineJournal  and “Use Blog Aggregators To Drive More Traffic To Your Site or Blog”, published April 22, 2013 by Mayra in Content Marketing, MetvtheChannel:

19.  Blogio
20.  Bloglines
21.  Bloglisting
24.  Newsvine
26.  ReadABlog
27.  Spillbean

As mentioned above, you’ll have to continue publishing in-between books. So while you continue to market your books and await your recognition to come along, you can become a work-at-home flex-worker, be it in the Call-Center World or any other flex-Work based job as it has the following benefits as outlined in my blog article entitled “Crowdsourced, Teleworking Flex-work Publishers needed for UWI and High School Students with Tablets in 2014 - How Jamaican Writers can make money via ePub Publishing Books”.

After all the days of permanent employment for year are over, slowly being replaced with a Contractual, Flex-Working Workplace! So the quicker you get used to this reality in Jamaica the better. As a writer, therefore, it suits you to be a work-at-home flex-Worker in a field related to writing.

Thus I’d recommend that as a writer, you also work online as a Blog Affiliate or Content Writer.  Here’s a decent list of Blog Affiliate or Content Writer Websites that pay you to write for them as stated in the article “20 Sites To Get Paid For Writing And Blogging – Best Of”, viewed August 25 2013 By Brian, Hongkiat:

1.      Squidoo
2.      HubPages
3.      ContentBLVD
4.      Helium
5.      Triond
6.      Epinions
7.      Fiverr
9.      Demand Media Studios
11.  About.Com
13.  Blogging.Org
14.  Bukisa
15.  Content Row
17.  Xomba
18.  Wizzley
19.  Zujava

Remember before you can use any of these Blog Affiliate or Content Writer websites, make sure you have the following:

1.      A Scotia VISA Debit Card or Credit Card to make payments as well as to set up the PayPal Account
2.      A PayPal Account to receive payments
3.      A Proxy Site to allow you to logon to the website as if you were in the US of A as explained in my blog article entitled “How to find Free TV online and how to Stream from Hulu or Netflix in Jamaica - Jamaican Pirate of the Caribbean on Stranger Tides Streaming Restricted US Content”
4.      A US Mailing address in case you need to receive mail or Cheques. This can be the same Mailing Address as used in Online Shopping as described in my blog article entitled “How to purchase items and subscribe to Magazines online and ship them to Jamaica”.

That’s it. Follow the Blog Affiliate or Content Writer website’s Instructions and Rules for submitting articles and if you’re as good as you claim, you can earn money paid to you in the form of cheques as explained in my Geezam blog article entitled “How to use Scotia VISA Debit Card Online” in-between marketing and writing books!

This’ll spread your fame and name as a writer as the more content your produce the more your name get’s recognized for writing great content and thus the more money you’ll eventually make. You might even make a living as a Writer as Jamaica improves our Wired and Wireless Broadband Coverage, PC’s and Laptops get cheaper, Scotia VISA Debit Card or Credit Card become more prevalent and Tablet adoption in Jamaica gets on the upswing!
