Not poppy nor Mandragora
Nor all they drowsy syrups of the world
Shall ever medicine thee to that sweet sleep
Which thou ow’dst yesterday.
Shakespeare, Othello, III, 3
First before I begin, my condolences to the family and friends of Apple CEO and chairman Steven Paul Jobs (1955AD – 2011AD). He was and will always be an inspiration to many in the field of Computing, proving them to be cool as well.
May the Demi-god Bastet be has companion as he is guided along the River Styx to hand the Jackal-headed God Anubis his personally engraved bribe of an Apple iPad 3.
The Apple iPhone 5 did not materialize as anticipated in my Geezam blog article entitled “Apple iPhone 5 coming in October and the Apple iPad 3 is in the wings”. Instead, we got the Apple iPhone 4S, which despite being a letdown, was still packing the good enough to impress as laid out in the article “Apple unveils faster, more powerful iPhone”, published Wednesday, October 05, 2011, AP, The Jamaica Observer.
Apple’s newly minted CEO Tim Cook did his thing, albeit with a lot less flair than expected on Tuesday October 4 2011AD in an intimate gathering in Apple’s Town Hall Room at their Headquarters in Cupertino, California located at the infinite Loop Drive.
Apparently it would seem that Apple, very much aware of the Google Android threat, had decided to merely:
2. Upgrade to iOS 5.0
3. Upgrade to HSDPA+ Release 7, capable of speeds of up to 42MBps, best effort, depending on how the Telecom Provider provisions their HSDPA+ Release 7 Networks
4. Include Telecom Provider Sprint in the launch along with Telecom Provider AT&T and Telecom Provider Verizon.
5. 8 Megapixel Camera
6. Make the phone capable of working on GSM (Global System Mobile) and CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) Networks will definitely put Telecom Equipment Handset makers on their guard, as currently no handsets sport this capability
7. Improve the Voice Assistant with technology from the US Government’s DARPA (Defense and Research Project Agency) spin-off company, Siri as stated in the article “The DARPA Project That's Powering the New iPhone 4S”, published Wednesday October 5 2011, Yahoo News
Close to what I had predicted for the Apple iPhone 5 as laid out in my blog article entitled “Apple iPhone 5 Event on Tuesday October 4 - Let's Talk iPhone as Android Dominance Looms”. It would appear that the Apple iPhone 4S is really geared at those people who are not currently on a two (2) year contract who want to upgrade to an Apple iPhone 4S or switch from a Blackberry or other “feature” phone to an Apple iPhone.
This it seems, is now the strategy for Apple; incremental upgrade to the Apple iPhone 4S and gradual expansion of its Telecom Provider base to attract more customers. The ability to work on any Telecom Network, be it GSM or CDMA, the so called “World Phone” concept, may herald the coming of the Apple iPhone 4S to Telecom Provider Digicel in Jamaica, who may be making an announcement on this in the next few days.
Spoken here first folks!
Also, by not making an Apple iPhone 5, they leave those contract holders with an Apple iPhone 4 open for a genuinely improved Apple iPhone 5 in 2012AD when their two (2) year contracts are up in 2012AD. In a Recession Economy, nobody is willing to break their contracts just for a new Apple iPhone 4S with incremental upgrades over the Apple iPhone 4, especially with ETF (Early Termination Fees) equivalent to that of the phone itself.
Most likely with the full set of features as laid out in my blog article entitled “Apple iPhone 5 Event on Tuesday October 4 - Let's Talk iPhone as Android Dominance Looms” will be coming in the real Apple iPhone 5 as was the case with the Apple iPhone 3GS, the precursor to the Apple iPhone 4.
The 8GB Apple iPhone 4 has been reduce in price to US$99 on a two (2) year contract and the 8GB Apple iPhone 3GS free on a two (2) year contract. Pre-orders for the Apple iPhone 4S began on Friday October 7th 2011AD, with the long lines a week later on Friday October 14th 2011AD.
No doubt accelerated by the Death of Steve Jobs on Wednesday October 5th 2011AD of respiratory failure due to his advanced pancreatic cancer as reported in the Reuters article “Steve Jobs died of respiratory arrest, tumor”, published Monday October 10, 2011 8:00pm EDT, Reuters.
But it is the news – or lack thereof – of the fate of the Apple iPod and its siblings the Apple iPod Touch, Apple iPod Nano and the Apple iPod Shuffle that has me excited. This as the coming of the real Apple iPhone 5 in 2012AD may see these devices getting the following upgrades:
1. 3G Support
2. Upgrade to iOS 6.0
3. iCloud Integration into Apple iPhone 5 as prior prognosticated in my blog article entitled “Apple and the Cloud Phone - Cheaper by the Dozen and Up in the Air”.
4. Better Battery Life, upwards of five (5) days full usage via the inclusion of integrated solar panels into the design as per my blog article entitled “Apple iPhone 5 and its Design - Of Gods, Critics, Lemmings, Sheep and Men”
If this is true, we may see the Apple iPod line move from being static storage music sand video players to devices synchable via Apple iCloud to a treasure trove of great music, turning your little music player into an Apple iRadio, as suggested in my Geezam blog article entitled “The Music Industry and the Cloud – Streaming Radio Nirvana”, bringing streaming music to a dedicated Apple product akin to a radio station.
The Apple iPod has received a stay of execution, it would appear, as these plans are in the offing for this product. After all, why would Apple have their product launch in the Town Hall Room, where ten (10) years prior, the Apple iPod had made it original debut?
