It
looks like a great year for Environmental Chemistry and Biochemistry. This as a
team of Researchers from the University of Georgia’s Bioenergy Systems Research
Institute have bio-engineered a bacterium, Pyrococcusfuriosus, to convert atmospheric CO2
into useful organic byproducts, particularly Bio-Fuels as stated in the article
“Scientists Turn Carbon Dioxide In The Air Into
Useful Products”, published 3/26/2013 @ 3:51PM by Alex Knapp, Forbes.
Effectively
the name of this newly genetically modified bacterium, Pyrococcusfuriosus, translated
from Latin literally means “Rushing Fireball” and stand to be the greatest
discovery since Oil itself as noted in “'Rushing
fireball' could turn carbon dioxide into Bio-Fuel”, published March 28,
2013 1:04 PM PDT by Shoshana Davis, CNET News.
It
gets it’s fiery name from the fact that it’s usually found at higher
temperatures of 200 C, way above boiling point deep in the ocean floor living
around Hot water Vents under extremes of temperature and pressure. This is a
very interesting trait to have as usually at those temperatures, most bacterium
and proteins are easily denatured. Thus genetically modifying it to operate at
lower temperatures and pressures such as 80 C and even managing to coax it to
convert Hydrogen into 3-hydroxypropionic acid, a starter
material for making Plastics is a big breakthrough.
That
means making Bio-Fuels straight from other elementary materials such a CO2
is not far away, as 3-hydroxypropionic acid contains Carbon, implying the Pyrococcusfuriosus bacterium
can fuse atoms to make larger compounds, a process only possible on earth in
Plants or Algae via Photosynthesis
Immediately
this presents the obvious solution to the problem of excess CO2 in
atmosphere, which is a Greenhouse Gases, by converting it directly into
something we can directly use. It thus is massive breakthrough. This means
we’ve effectively closed the Krebb Cycle loop by eliminating Plants from the
Equation as it relates to making Bio-fuels.
This
reminds me of a company named Joule that uses Algae to convert CO2
and Water into Bio-Fuel as stated in the article “Joule to make diesel
at solar fuels plant”, published April 27, 2010 8:07 AM PDT by Martin
LaMonica, CNET News.
No
need for Yeast to Ferment sugars or other bacteria to break down other forms of
cellulosic material into alcohol or other Bio-fuels. This as is the intention
of Russian investors coming to Jamaica to grow Sorghum for Ethanol production
as noted in my blog
article entitled “Russians
see potential in Ethanol Fuel Plant in Jamaica – From Russia With Love for
sorghum”.
With
the genetic modification of the Pyrococcusfuriosus
bacterium, we can now do the process directly, without having
to grow crops specifically for fuel or even wasting land space. In effect, with
further research and in conjunction with other research into using other
Bacteria to convert organic waste into Bio-Fuels as noted in my blog article
entitled “Alternative
Energy and The World - The Purple Cow and the Sun Salutes You” , we can
close the loop as it relates to human use of Fossil Fuels as this gives us a
means to converting CO2 back into useful Bio-Fuel.
The
the benefits of clean boring fuels that are ok for your engine and even
zero-Emissions Vehicles such as All-Electric vehicles in Jamaica as noted in my blog article
entitled “ATL

to manufacture All-Electric Vehicles in St. Lucia - Strengthening CARICOM ties
with Jamaican Skilled Labour” may soon be a reality. This news is bound to
spur further research and development of the Bio-Fuel sector and the
importation of All-Electric Vehicles into the island.
With
further research economy-of-scale Bio-Chemical Process Plants using Pyrococcusfuriosus
bacteria can make this process a viable commercial business opportunity, with
large plants set up to sequester CO2 directly from the atmosphere.
Even better, emitters or CO2 from Cars and Trucks to very large
factories now have a financial reason to capture CO2: sale of
sequestered CO2 to Bio-Chemical Process Plants using Pyrococcusfuriosus
bacteria to make Bio-Fuel.
Thereby
cleaning the environment of CO2 and at the same time helping to
recycle CO2 with both economic, financial and environmental
benefits. My writing about this develpement should not come as
a surprise to many of my readers. Of late, I’ve been on something of a homage
to Biochemistry in 2013. But this particular homage is huge, as if allowed to
develop, it’ll change everything.
It’s
