Google Android Top Dog in Mobile Ad Marketshare in First Quarter of 2014 – Apple iOS STILL more efficient at Mobile Advertising powered by iTunes

Looks like Advertisers love advertising on Google’s Android Mobile platform. For the first time in quite awhile, Google Android has grabbed 42% of Global Advertising Market share in the First Quarter of 2014 according to statistical information gleaned from Mobile Advertising Company Opera Media Works as stated in “Google Inc. (GOOG) Owned Android Becoming An Increasingly Attractive Platform For Mobile Advertising: Grabs 42% Market”, published May 5, 2014 4:05 AM By Asif Iqbal Shaik, Dazeinfo.

Google has been investing heavily in their Google Android Operating System since 2010 when it burst forth on the world. It's now the dominant Mobile Operating System Globally.

Well that changed in the First Quarter of 2014 when for the first time, Global Advertising Marketshare for Google Android surpassed Apple iOS. This mainly thanks to Mobile Advertisers running like scared rats from Symbian and Blackberry, which by the way is showing signs of life as pointed out in my blog article entitled “Blackberry to launch Phablet with Blackberry 10.3 by Fourth Quarter 2014 - Profitability in the Far East as Phablets, BBM 2.0 and Wearables are Trending in 2016” so they may soon start scurrying the other way.

That and the fact that Google Android Ecosystem of devices is expanding from just smartphones to Google Glass as pointed out in my blog article entitled “Google Glass launched early as a Product - Google pre-empting Samsung Galaxy Glass and Facebook's Oculus Rift replacing the smartphone in 2015 the Year of the Sheep” and eventually Google Wear smartwatches, making that shift a sensible one for Mobile Advertisers.

Google Android Top Dog in Mobile Ad Marketshare – Apple iOS more efficient at Mobile Advertising

So here are the numbers for Global Marketshare for Mobile Advertising according to Mobile Advertising Company Opera Media Works:

1.      42.83% for Google Android
2.      38.17% for Apple iOS

When Google Android's Advertising marketshare is broken down in more details, several smartphone brands come to the fore:

1.      60.22% for Samsung
2.      17.02% for Other Operating Systems
3.      11.11% for LG
4.      5.73% for Motorola
5.      3.32% for HTC
6.      2.59% for ZTE

The majority of the Mobile Advertising traffic is coming from the following countries:

1.      50.61% from United States of America
2.      22.85% from Asia Pacific
3.      13.18% from Europe
4.      5.78% from Non-Americas
5.      4.03% from Africa
6.      2.71% from Middle East

Interestingly, despite this overwhelming show of force, Apple iOS STILL makes more Revenue from their now smaller marketshare i.e. they are more efficient at advertising than Google Android.

When it comes to making revenue from their Operating System, both from Mobile Advertising and even App Stores, Apple iOS leads and has been leading since November 2012 according to App analytics firm Distimo as stated in the article “Google Play is growing faster, but Apple’s App Store brings in way more money: Distimo”, published 20 December 2012 by Andrii Degeler, The Next Web and “Google Play surges, but Apple's App Store is still No. 1”, published December 20, 2012 7:03 AM PST by Lance Whitney, CNET News.

Apple is still king of Apps. In fact, the Apple iTunes Store rakes in US$15 million in average daily revenue in November 2012, mainly from in-app Purchases from Freemium Apps as well as Premium Apps, compared to US$$3.5 million in average daily revenue. Apple iTunes Store, despite Google Play Store needing only another 25,000 Apps to be on par, still makes more money, hands down.

Hence they’ll be kings of Mobile Advertising Revenue despite having less Mobile Advertising Marketshare! Still with the Asian, Korean, Russian and Chinese Markets yet to be conquered, the Latin American, African and Middle Eastern markets represent areas where BOTH Google Android and Apple iOS devices can spread their wings and increase their advertising impressions from Mobile Advertising!
