Apple iPad 2 and Newspapers - Titan A.E

I’ll make thee glorious by my pen
And famous by my sword.

Marquis of Montrose, My Dear and Only Love

So was my promise to my now deceased girlfriend, Audia Grasnton, a NCTVET certified cosmetologist from Toll Gate , Clarendon, who I have immortalized in my blog article entitled “Audia Granston, Jack Abramoff and the Spirit of Creativity and Innovation in Jamaica”, which expresses something that we both agreed upon: the lack of openness between Businesses and their customers and the innovative drive to be creative in the workplace.

This lack of creativity as well as openness to express one self is at the heart of the demise of Telecom Provider CLARO; Mexicans who acted as if they knew everything and refused to take advice from people directly, instead choosing to snoop on conversations of technicians. A work environment as described in my blog article entitled “America, Productivity and International Labour - Dream Merchant”.

So it is nice to know that Montreal, Canada-based newspaper La Presse is planning to go fully digital by giving free Apple iPads to subscribers of its newspaper as stated in the article “Newspaper Plans to give Free iPads to Subscribers”, published By Darrell Etherington Mar. 11, 2011, 9:05am PT, GigaOM. I guess they took their queue from The Daily, News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch’s launch of a newspaper made exclusively for the Apple iPad.

This I had originally envisioned in my blog article entitled “The Future of the Humble Newspaper in Jamaica”!

Great to know that the community of Pridees and Rest Square and surrounding Districts in Milk River, Clarendon are at least connected to this revolution known as the Internet! Many a young child in my community can now do their homework easier thanks to my arguing for the site to get 3G!

A glaring example of the lack of innovation is the fact that to date, Telecom Provider CLARO is yet to begin selling or directly supporting the Apple iPad in Jamaica. With the exception of Carlette Deleon aka the Pet Tales Chick aka “Dilly” of Television Jamaica fame, Molly Wood of CNET fame, Natalie Morris nee Del Conte, also of CNET fame (foreigners in a foreign land call California!) and a few other friends right here in the bushes of May Pen, Clarendon, Tablets have not caught on with Jamaicans  - at all!!

This despite my blog article entitled “Apple iPad bests the Apple iPhone - CLARO Sales Executives left with mouths agape” in which I hinted that Telecom Provider CLARO would have begun carrying the First Generation Apple iPad on the second version refresh.

Aside from the cosmetic upgrades of a front and rear facing camera and a new Dual-Core A5 processor “engine”, there is very little difference between the First Generation Apple iPad and the Apple iPad 2 as noted in my Geezam Blog article entitled “Apple iPad 2 - Dual-Core Easy Skankin'

The First Generation Apple iPad, now reincarnated as the Apple iPad 2, was eagerly gobble up by many an Apple Fanboy who endured mugging and the cold to get their hands on this gift from the Gods (yours truly suggested this!!). They were duly rewarded at 5pm on Friday March 11th 2011 as stated in the in the following trifecta of news sources:

  1. The article entitled “Apple fans snap up the new iPad”, published Friday, March 11, 2011, by Sebastian Smith, AFP, Yahoo! News,
  2. The AFP video entitled “Apple fans snap up the new iPad”, uploaded by AFP on March 11th  2011, YouTube
  3. The CNET News Live blog entitled   Live from NYC, SF: iPad 2 launch (semi-live blog)”, published March 11, 2011 3:45 PM PST by Marguerite Reardon and Josh Lowensohn, Apple – CNET News

Granted I know we Jamaicans are a rough, rugged and tumble bunch, but not even one guinea pig…er…..I mean purchaser of a Tablet from Telecom Provider Digicel?

Telecom Provider Digicel is the sole Telecom Provider supporting the somewhat military sounding Samsung Galaxy P1000 as first mentioned in my blog article entitled “Digicel the ITU and Samsung Galaxy Tablet - The Sorcerer's Apprentice”.

Telecom Provider Digicel can do the same thing in Partnership with The Jamaica Observer and the Jamaica Gleaner to subsidize Tablets form people who have active newspaper subscriptions as suggested in the article “Digicel Samsung Galaxy Tablet and Newspapers - Tomorrow Never Dies and the Paper Man”.

Especially as now they are the owners of Telecom Provider CLARO as stated in my blog article entitledDigicel buys CLARO Jamaica - Jumanji Exchange is no Robbery”. Telecom Provider Digicel  can now use Telecom Provider CLARO 3G Data Services to offer subscription Data Services, so that the “free” Samsung Galaxy Tablet will be a popular for Business and Residential users who subscribe to Newspapers and cash cow for Telecom Provider Digicel

I am yet to even receive one at the Amazing PC store in Bargain Village, May Pen, Clarendon to repair, muchless touch to declare that I touched, Lindsworth Deer, a Researcher/PC Technicians at the May Pen Branch, had touched a Tablet. In Jamaica! With these hands!

Good to note that unlike our American cousins, Jamaicans are not stir-crazy over gadgets as they come out, pragmatically waiting until the tech-obsessed Americans sort out all the bugs before we go all crazy about Tablets. That’ll be in another two (2) years from 2011, when hopefully the London Olympics 2012 and the World Cup in 2014 will persuade many to at least get the Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11n) version.

This so that they can stream the London Olympics 2012 via Wayne Chen (of Super Plus fame!) and Lees owned Municipal Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11n) Networks, namely Dekal Wireless and Nubian-1 Tech Services Limited as described in the articles “Wayne Chen, Lees enter Wireless Broadband Market”, published Friday July 30th 2010 by Mark Titus, Gleaner Writer, Jamaica Gleaner and “Another small player emerges in the wireless broadband market”, published Friday August 2 2010 by Mark Titus, Gleaner Writer,  Jamaica Gleaner.

My blog article on the Geezam Blog entitled “Dekal Wireless - Broadband for the Masses” and my blog article entitled “Telecoms and White spaces - A Man for All Seasons and the Big Bang Theory” makes the case for Super Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11n) with their range extended by the implementation of spectrum license free “White” Space Frequency being able to deliver low cost Wireless Broadband to the masses. This without the need to purchase a modem as opined in my blog article entitled “Digicel and WiMaX 4G Mobile - Gorillas in the Mist

To summarize, the endorsement of Media Personalities for Tablets would spur their rapid adoption in much the same way that the Vybz Kartel/Russian team in the videos entitled “Vybz Kartel featuring Russian ‘Jeans and Fitted’” and his prior hit song “Vybz Kartel ft. Popcaan and Gaza Slim - Clarks” is making everything from cake soap, Blackberrys, Rosary Chains and even Clarks sell.

Throw in a Telecom Provider Digicel making a partnership with the major local Newspapers, The Jamaica Observer and the Jamaica Gleaner in Jamaica to subsidize the Samsung Galaxy Tablet…..and who knows, the Apple iPad……. akin to La Presse in Montreal, Canada and Tablets to blast off to make a Planet Bob for those of us in Jamaica with newspaper subscriptions who would like consuming our news on Tablets, allowing Newspapers to go fully paperless and Digital, Titan A.E. (2000) Style!
