200 Palisados Streetlights LED upgraded by CMI, JPS - How 93,000 Streetlights, Traffic Lights can be Solar and Wind powered

Christmas will be brighter for the people who ply the Palisados Highway from the Norman Manley International Airport thanks to some new LED (Light Emitting Diodes) Streetlights. Rockfort and Port Royal in East Kingston is now gonna be a really hard place to commit a Crime!

This is all thanks to the Engineers at the CMI (Caribbean Maritime Institute) who are on the final lap of completing their retrofitting and upgrade of some two hundred (200) Streetlights along the Palisados Highway at a cost of some JA$5.1 million as reported by the Horses' mouth aka the Jamaica Information Service in the article “LED Street Lights Installed Along Palisadoes Roadway”, published December 4, 2014 By Douglas McIntosh, Jamaica Information Service.

The Lights were symbolically commissioned into service by the Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining Minister, Hon. Phillip Paulwell on Tuesday December 2^nd 2014 during a ceremony along the Palisadoes Road. The Engineers at CMI have completed some one hundred and eighty (180) Streetlights with another twenty (20) to go before Christmas 2014 starts and preferably before the start of 2015, the Year of the Sheep.

The project was jointly undertaken by the following entities:

1.   Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy, and Mining

2.   CMI (Caribbean Maritime Institute)

3.   JPS (Jamaica Public Service Company)

The project to retrofit the Ballast and other Electronic parts of the Streetlight that power the  HPS (High Pressure Sodium) Bulbs and convert them to power LED's actually started back in 2013 with just 30 Streetlights being retrofitted as noted in my blog article entitled “JPSCo and CMI to retrofit Streetlights with LED Lightbulbs - Fixing Day Burning Streetlights as Ban on Incandescent Bulbs needed”.

JPS Co Streetlights can all be upgraded to LED - Solar Powered Streetlights and Traffic Lights is the Next Step

So will this project be expanded to the rest of Jamaica?

Not so sure about that as this appears to be just an isolate project spearheaded by the GOJ in partnership with these stakeholders. But if retrofitting the Streetlights is that easy, it'll be fairly easy to secure more funding to expand the project. There are some 93,000 Street that cost the GOJ some JA$2.8 Billion in Electricity Bills per annum.

To retrofit that many streetlights, based on the cost of this single project, would be approximately JA$2,325,000,000 or US$20,547,944.93. That's roughly the same amount of money that's being languished on paying the Electricity Bill to the JPS Co, who they already owe millions in unpaid bills for Day Burning Streetlights since 2011.

This as pointed out by JPS Co Corporate Communications Manager Winsome Callum in my blog article entitled “Alternative Energy Contract for JPS Co Streetlight Upgrade Coming - JPS Co Winsome Callum's Bourne Supremacy”.

Already, Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining Minister, Hon. Phillip Paulwell has hinted that this may be coming in 2015 during the ceremony along the Palisadoes Road. He made mention of some US$20 million borrowed from the IDB (Inter-American Development Bank), possibly taken from the same US$140 million announced in February 2014 as stated in the article “IDB approves US$140 million in new loans to Jamaica”, published Friday, February 07, 2014, The Jamaica Observer.

He also made reference to some US$4.5 million earmarked from a sum of US$105 million borrowed from the World Bank to be used to get the MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise) Businesses  to implement Energy efficient solutions as part of their best Business practices as noted in my blog article entitled “Jamaica's World Bank's US$105 million Loan – All My Children Animation, SME VC's and Public Sector get Second Chance at Economic Redemption”.

So will some of those monies from the World Bank and the IDB be funneled to take the campaign to retrofit the 93,000 Streetlights islandwide? And will it also include Solar or Wind Power, thereby taking the Streetlights and potentially the Traffic Lights off the JPS Co Grid and make money by selling excess power to the JPS Co Grid as well?

Exciting times come 2015 when the CMI Complete this Streetlight Retrofit Project and the Dim Orange glow of the HPS streetlight is replaced by the bright Cool White of LED Bulbs in 2015, the Year of the Sheep.

Gartner and IDC Forecast Tablets, PC fall, Smartphone rise - How Tablet's 3-Year Lifespan means Sub-US$199 Smartphones, Chrome OS to Dominate

Folks, it's now the Fourth Quarter of 2014 and Tablets appear to be in a freefall!

Analyst Gartner is predicting a slowdown in Tablet sales for the entire 2014 when compared to 2013 as stated in the article “Tablet sales growth to tap the brakes this year, says Gartner”, published October 15, 2014 6:29 AM PDT by Lance Whitney, CNET News.

According to their Press Release as stated in “Gartner Says Sales of Tablets Will Represent Less Than 10 Percent of All Devices in 2014”, published October 15, 2014, Gartner, they're projecting the following:

1.      229 million units in 2014

2.      11% increase in Tablet sales from 2013

3.      9.5% of total worldwide sales of devices

By comparison, 2013 was a robust growth year for Tablets, which grew by some 55%. Clearly a slowdown in Tablet Sales in progress as I’d predicted in my blog article entitled “IDC and NPD Group record Tablet Decline and Phablet Rise - “White Box” Chinese Tablets and Wearable Computing in First Quarter of 2014 making Tablets obsolete in the Year of the Sheep” .

Tablet Sales Growth slowing – 3 Year lifespan a crossing of the PC Market and smartphones

As predicted earlier in 2014 based on First Quarter Sales for 2014, the downward trend in Tablets was due to the cheaper Chinese so-called “White-Label” Generic Tablets, which many companies in the US of A may be ordering and customizing instead of buying premium Brand Tablets.

The Table makes it clear that the growth areas are in smartphones, mobile phones and hybrid devices. Analyst Gartner also projects that Americans are waiting longer before upgrading their Tablets, resulting in a lot less Tablets being purchased than projected each year, often as long as three (3) years.

Tablets aren't sold with a 2 -year contract like smartphones. So there is no pressure in Developing World countries to buy a new Tablet every two (2) years as many opt to buy the Wi-Fi only models and not the Wi-Fi and 3G/4G LTE Models.

By 2018, Gartner predicts the following:

1.      90 million fewer new Tablet purchasers

2.      155 million fewer Tablet replacements

Analyst IDC also put out Stats Projections that seem to confirm Gartner''s Projections for 2014 as reported in the article “IDC: Tough year for Tablets, not as bad as thought for PCs”, published November 25, 2014 11:48 AM PST by Edward Moyer, CNET News:

1.      7.2% Growth in Tablet shipments compared to 52.5% Growth in Tablet shipments in 2013

2.      235.7 million units to be shipped Worldwide in 2014

Breaking down IDC's stats, the marketshare for the major Operating Systems works out as follows:

1.      67.7% for Google Android Tablets

2.      27.5% for Apple iOS Tablets

3.      4.6% for Windows Tablets

Table Sales are slowing. But nowhere is the slowdown more dramatic than Apple. The inventor of the Tablet back in 2010 now relegated to Second Place after ceding Pole Position to the horde of Android Tablet.

Apple iPad Sales are falling – Incremental Apple iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 Fail to impress

With only a few incremental changes in the Tablet market that Apple basically invented, such as the Touch ID for the Apple iPad Air 2 and the Apple iPad Mini 3, many Americans and Europeans see no reason to buy a new Tablet.

Apple has claimed that Apple iPad sales are down by 14% as reported in the article “Apple's role reversal: 'Mature' Mac outpaces iPad in revenue”, published October 20, 2014 2:28 PM PDT by Ben Fox Rubin and Shara Tibken, CNET News so these stats corroborate what the analysts are claiming.

The reasoning is also the same as well; slowing sales due to consumers holding on to their Apple iPads longer as noted in the article “Apple’s iPad sales are not so magical after all”, published  April 24, 2014 6:06 PM PDT by Shara Tibken, CNET News.

Even when they do, they're face with dozens of inexpensive Google Android “White Label” Tablets, prompting them to hold on to their Tablets a lot longer, often handing them down to their children whenever they upgrade.

Consequently, the Tablet Market, at least from Apple’s point of view, behaves like a cross between the Smartphone and the PC Market. Apple iPads, once the Golden children of Apple heart, has fallen out of favour, with even sales of Apple Macbooks outpacing the Apple iPad.

Tablets fall, smartphones rise - Developing World bonanza for sub-US$199 smartphones

While Tablets appears to heading for a bust, it's boom time for smartphones. Overall the market for Google android smartphones is expected to grow their marketshare by some 47% in 2014. To give you an idea of Gartner's prediction for sales, a quick perusal of their projections should set you straight.

In terms of sales, that translates to an increase in the Sales of Google Android smartphones in the Developing World are expected to grow as follows in 2014:

1.         52% for midrange Android Devices

2.         100% for Chinese branded smartphones

Replacements are not a problem, being as the cheaper units are easier to replace than a more expensive Tablet:

1.      71% in 2014, an increase of 17 percentage points from 2013

So smartphone, particularly in the Developing World, is looking bright for 2015, Year of the sheep. But what of the fortunes of the humble PC and Laptop Market? Not so good I’m afraid…..

Chromebooks growing in U.S. K-12 Schools – 2017 will see Triple Growth to 1% Marketshare

The Tablet Market is faring a lot better than the PC market, which is in steady decline albeit according to analyst NPD, there was a brief spike in PC sales during the Back to School Season in the US of A which starts in August 2014 to September 2014 as reported in my blog article entitled “NPD Group Stats say PC’s up 3% - Why ACSI says American prefer PC's as the Price is Right for the Return of the Mac”.

The PC Market has been in a freefall and the predictions of analyst IDC are no different from Gartner, albeit slightly more positive. They're projecting a 2.7% decline, compared to 3.7% last year 2013. This puts total shipments for PC's at around 306.7 million units, matching somewhat with Gartner's projections.

Right now the only area of growth in the PC Industry is in Chromebooks which according to stats from the IDC are making headway in the U.S. K-12 School System as noted in my blog article entitled “IDC Stats say Google Chromebooks dominates U.S. K-12 School System - 1 TB Free Google Drive as Microsoft HP Stream and 12.9-inch Apple iPad in 2015”.

Analyst Gartner also expects Chromebook shipments to triple by year 2017, boosting the Asian-dominated Chromebook market to 1% as noted in my blog article entitled “Chromebooks Sales to Triple by 2017 – How Rapid Sales Heaven for PC Makers means Apple iPad and Microsoft Surface Pro 3 under attack”.

Chromebooks may result in a U.S. PC Makers finally deciding to full commit to Chromebooks alongside their Asian Partners. Already Dell has a the US$160 7-inch Dell Venue 7 and US$200 8-inch Dell Venue 8 as detailed in my blog article entitled “US$160 7-inch Dell Venue 7 and US$200 8-inch Dell Venue 8 - Pure Android 4.4 KitKat Tablet in Red and Black”, so making Chromebooks isn't much of a stretch for them.

Smartphones are the growth engines for PC makers who’ve switched to making them with the Tablet Market showing the same susceptibilities as the PC Market. So expect an increasing reliance on smartphones and the production of more Chromebook PC's and Laptops to augment the falling sales of PC's and Laptops in 2015 and beyond.

How Google Forms creates Online Questionnaires and Surveys - Questionnaires and Surveys for your Blog

Google Docs allows you and your friends to do real-time collaborative work over the internet, so long as they have a Gmail account. I know this, albeit my team-mates and I doing the Professional Diploma in Teaching at MICO College University have yet to take Full advantage of Google Drive.

It may be because of pressure from such free alternatives as Google Docs that Microsoft has made Microsoft Office 360, their Cloud-based version of Office into a Freemium product and split into three (3) Separate Apps for Apple iOS users as reported in my blog article entitled “Microsoft Office 365 goes Freemium Model - One Becomes Three as Word, Excel and PowerPoint with US$6.99 monthly to remove Restrictions”.

Off campus, my life revolves around blogging for my personal Blog, My Thoughts on Technology and Jamaica and working Freelance as a Writer for the Geezam blog.

My Introduction to Google Forms - Offer from American Company to Write Sponsored Articles

A couple weeks prior, I received an email offer from a company abroad to write sponsored article for a Marketing company. As usual, I’m skeptical of such offers of money, especially as I’m a mere blog and not a big-time website.

Usually such thing are hacking attempts, often employing emails loaded with links that you click on in order to tag the location of your machine. Once you click on them, they download malicious code unto your machine and access or open up Logical ports to allow hackers to gain remote access to your computer.

Once they’re achieved that, they usually use it to remotely control your computer, often installing Keyloggers in order to steal passwords as I’d explained in my blog article entitled “Professor Marco Gercke warns of Scammers using Keyloggers for Spear Phishing - How to use Keyloggers and how to Protect yourself from Scammer's American Hustle for Fast Cash”.

So I took the usual precautions, scanning the websites and checking online in forums to see if it was a scam. To my surprise it appeared legit, even sending me what appeared to be a Google Forms to fill out.

Google Forms? “What that” you ask? That’s what this article is about….

Google Forms has improved – How a little known service can add Survey capability to your blog

I had never heard of Google Forms before, muchless known that you could create Survey forms so easily without knowing any scripting language. This is like the best kept secret online, as the only sources I could find were on mainly from Google’s blogs and YouTube Channels!

Thus Google Forms, allows you to make Surveys and forms that persons online can fill out. Those responses are automatically collected in a spreadsheet in Google Docs that you can peruse in real-time as noted in the “Google Drive post Google Forms”, Refreshed, published Wednesday, January 30, 2013, Google Drive Blog.

Google Forms was a recent addition to Google’s better known Suite of Productivity Web apps, Google Docs that allows for real-time Collaboration online. Google Docs are a part of Google Drive that serves up 15Gb of online Cloud Storage once you have a Gmail Account as explained in my Geezam blog article entitled “Google Drive, the Dropbox clone, now ups the ante to 15GB of Free Storage during Google I/O”.

Google Forms may be used for the purpose of conducting a survey, Questionnaire or for Data Capture for your Website or Blog. The video below does an excellent job of explaining the full hidden features of Google Forms and how to embed it in your Blog.

If you’re the owner of a Google Chromebook, you’d have realizes that it can be used to open older Microsoft Office documents as noted in my Geezam blog article entitled “Laptop makers go Chromebooks as Google Chrome’s Office Extension makes it easy to View and Edit Office Documents”.

Google Forms now has Professional Themes – Easy Drag-and-Drop Questionnaires and Surveys

Good to note that Google is continuing to improve the product.

In September, 2014 Google  added a “Change Theme” Button on the Toolbar that allows you to select more professionally preset Forms for Questionnaires and Surveys as reported in the article “Google Forms Now Less Ugly Thanks To Addition Of Themes”, published Sep 2, 2014 by Sarah Perez, TechCrunch. Check out their Google for Work YouTube channel for Tip and Tricks on how to use these latest updates in Google Forms.

So excited about Google Forms?

I’m already planning how I’m gonna use them to not only do surveys and Questionnaires, but also for a Business Idea and even in my Courses next year 2015, the Year of the Sheep, when the New Semester of my Professional Diploma in Teaching at MICO College University resumes.

How to change Blogger Blog Default Font and Font Size – Why Bun and Cheese is good for Bloggers

I’ve been having problems with the default font of my blogger blog of late.

Today was just the last straw, as I intend to go Professional by 2017 as stated in my blog article entitled “Strategies to mitigate against Blogspot Shutdown – How to do a backup of your Blogger Blog in case Disaster Strikes as Maintenance is key” but this lack of control over all aspects of my blog’s appearance is frustrating to say the least.

So I put on my coding hat once more and dipped my hands into the innards of Blogger to look at the HTML. My intent was to change the default Font type and size of Blogger to “Times New Roman” and “12”in order to make the font appear larger.

I was successful so far, but I’ll have to do some off-axis tests by using the Browsers on the computers at MICO University College to make sure it’s fixed. Make sure before you proceed to edit your template that you make a backup copy as explained in my blog article entitled “Strategies to mitigate against Blogspot Shutdown – How to do a backup of your Blogger Blog in case Disaster Strikes as Maintenance is key”.

So folks, without further ado, Get some Bun and cheese and let’s get to this DIY (Do It Yourself) for blogger. Here’s how I did it.

How to change Blogger Blog Default Font and Font Size – Why Bun and Cheese is good for Bloggers

First I logged into Blogger as shown below.

Then I clicked on Template at the right to access my Blogger Template. This is basically going into the guts of Blogger. Make sure before you back up your Blogger template before making any modifications.

Click on the button that says Edit HTML. This will display your HTML code for your template. Backup at this point and get ready to make changes.

Point the mouse inside of the HTML field and click Ctrl-F on your keyboard to bring up a mini search window. In that mini-search Window type “font” and with the cursor in the mini search window press ENTER key.

It’ll search and find the section of code that say “font”, highlighted in yellow. This basically controls the default Font type and size for your Blogger Template.

Change where it says “12x” to “14x” and the first font listed i.e. “Arial” to “Times New Roman”. This’ll change the entire Blog from Arial as the first default font listed to Times New Roman, size 14, which appears as 12 on screen when I tested it multiple times on my computer.

You can click Preview Template in order to see what your blog will look like before you commit to the changes made.

Once changed, click the “Save Template” button and save the template. It’ll take awhile if you have a large blog, so be patient.

That’s it! You’ll now have a Times New Roman Font, size 12, on all of your blog pages. Best of all, if you wanna change it to any other fonts, they’re the same as listed in your Microsoft Word document; I just prefer Times New Roman Font, size 12 as my default as my readers like its visible readability.

How Celebrities Return of the Flip Phones Herald Smaller Smartphones and Smartwatch phones

I should have logically seen this coming. Queue the Star Wars Teaser Trailer for Star Wars: Awakening of the Force as this is basically an awakening of the Flip-Phone Force!

Best of all my Luddite camp is getting crowded…..with Celebrities as noted in my blog article entitled “The Reason why I don't like Smartphones - Location Privacy and How to disable Location Services on Android and iOS”.

Celebrities are now opting to go back to flip phones altogether simply because they're not Internet connected as reported in the article “High-profile stars find fashion in old-school phone tech”, published December 2, 2014, 9:43 AM, CBS NEWS. 

This is yet  ANOTHER big fallout from the Apple iCloud incident aka the Fappening aside from people switching to taking pictures with Polaroid Cameras as described in my blog article entitled “Polaroid Comeback as Analog Photography back in Vogue - US Millennials taking Polaroid Pictures as Privacy-loving Fappening Celebrities go Retro”.

Looks like Samsung may have been onto something when they had launched the Galaxy Golden and the Samsung Galaxy Hennessy and then the SM-W2014 in late 20313 as chronicled in my blog article entitled “Samsung launches a third flip Feature smartphone, the SM-W2014 - Quad-Core Processor in yet another oversized smartphone indicates Retro Trend among South Koreans and Chinese”.

Already several Celebrities have been spotted toting these blast-from-the-past cellphones as per the video below, the ONLY one I could find after scouring YouTube.  

Apparently the trend seems to have started when Vogue's editor-in-chief Anna Wintour was spotted, Gossip Girl Style, in the wild, three (3) months aback using a flip phone made circa 2003, based on my expertise in AT&T flip phones.

Since she’s a fashion expert, many are bound to follow, as Vogue sets the trend in the Upper East side of Manhattan, apparently. Like ducks following their mother into a pond, the Fashion Police and paparazzi have begun spotting Celebrities in the wild toting these blasts-from-the-past.

Suddenly, just like that, it has become hip to be flip, as pointed out in the New York Magazine article entitled “My Week With a Flip Phone”, published October 29, 2014 12:37 p.m. By Allison P. Davis, The Cut, New York Magazine.

You’re now A-List if you go retro, basically!

Songbird Rihanna has been toting one. Spotted too has been Kate Beckinsale, wielding it in her social circle like a true flip phone Jedi. The Force is indeed strong as yes; I’ve sensed the awakening of the Flip Phone Force.

The reasoning is sound, as 2G Cellphones are not connected to 3G Internet and don’t use app, yet many of them still have fairly good cameras, making them great for taking nude photos and storing them…..or deleting them later.

Other notable personalities have flipped, such as the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, as per this photo of him using a flip phone. Apparently the Blackberry he usually totes may have been left back at the White House, so he had to make call using this older model flip phone.

New York Senator Chuck Schumer have begin to stockpile them, as they love the simplicity of these flip phones and fear they'll go extinct, echoeing the sentiments of reality star and A-Lister Kim Karsdashian, who reportedly buys them by the boxful on Ebay as reported in the article “Why Kim Kardashian has a stash of BlackBerry phones”, published Tuesday 28 October 2014 13.01 GMT by Samuel Gibbs, The UK Guardian.

To quote New York Senator Chuck Schumer: “Since I like these so much I bought a whole bunch cause I figure they'll stop making them sooner or later. They may have already stopped making them.” Well, he BETTER start stockpiling them real fast.....'cause their increased desire for simplicity, privacy and longer battery life may be steadily pushing up the price of these older phones from yonder 90's!

That is, if this trend lasts longer than a year and isn’t just a flash in the pan!

Return of the Flip phones - The Fappening, ease-of-use reasons for Flip-Phone Force Awakening

Yes folks, the Fappening still has many celebrities shaken up and realizing that the cloud isn't safe. Ditto too the Snappening, which also exposed 200,000 teen Celebrity-wannabees who take nude selfies on Snapchat to the cruel cold world as noted in my blog article entitled “200,000 Naked Teenagers in Snapchat’s Snappening – How Teenagers Private Parts got swiped by Child Pornography Admins in the Thomas Crowne Affair”.

So they're going retro to not only safeguard their privacy but also because they're easier type on and aren't prone to butt dialing as noted in the article “Forget the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy, the humble flip phone is back”, published Friday 5 December 2014 14.19 GMT by Hannah Jane Parkinson, The UK Guardian.

Plus on a personal level, I must admit there is something satisfying about the click noise they make when you flip one out to answer a phone call and the snap-shut clap of the phone when you close its indestructible little shell. It’s a feeling like power in your hands that announces to all around you that you’re someone of importance…..who’s not afraid to buck the tech-savvy trend and stand up and be counted as a Forward-retro thinking Luddite.

And yes, I have to say this as a long-time Luddite and owner of a Nokia flashlight phone that these flip phones have battery lives that last the entire day WITHOUT the need to lug around a charger or a Portable Batter Charges to extend their power-sucking LCD Screen such as those described in my Geezam blog article entitled “How to extend your smartphone’s battery Life with a Portable Battery Charger”.

So will this trend eventually result in flip phones and candy bar phones selling for higher prices and a slow death for phablets as the article “Hold the (oversized retro) phone! Flip and ‘brick’ mobile are making a comeback thanks to popularity among celebrities”, published 5 December 2014 11:25 GMT by VICTORIA WOOLLASTON, Daily Mail UK, suggests?

Flip phone a trend after six months – Herald for smaller smartphones and Smartwatch phones

Not necessarily, but if it continues for longer than six months, a year at most, smartphone makers may have to start rethinking the so-called trend to larger smartphones. Especially in light of the fact that both Kantar WorldPanel and Consumer Intelligence Reports stats suggests that the smaller Apple iPhone 6 is more popular than the bigger Apple iPhone 6 Plus as pointed out in my blog article entitled “Kantar Worldpanel Stats say British and Europeans love Apple iPhone 6 - China growing as Consumer Intelligence Report confirms iPhone 6 Plus unnecessary”.

We may start seeing flip phones, buttons and all but with more advanced features such as Bluetooth and NFC (Near Field Communication), enableing them to function as an Electronic Wallet for your Credit Cards. They may even sport higher resolution cameras, GPS, Accelerometer, Magnetometer, improved voice commands, Fingerprint readers.

These smart-flip phones would, however, sacrifice the bloated Apps and larger screen for widgets instead that do the same thing as Apps but with less screen graphics and more human-like interaction.....kinda like a smartwatch such as the US$199 Pebble Steel Smartwatch as reported in my blog article entitled “US$199 for the Pebble Steel smartwatch as Update brings Activity Tracking and Sleep Monitoring”.

Plus on an even brighter note, this trending towards smaller, more power efficient devices suggests that smartwatches such as the Samsung Galaxy Gear S that doubles as a smartwatch, fitness Tracker and a phone on your wrist as noted in my Geezam blog article entitled “Samsung’s Galaxy Gear S Smartwatch coming to Jamaica while reppin’ for Tizen” are the future.

In essence, a true smartphone, capable of taking high-resolution photos, and sending them to friend via Bluetooth and NFC, acting like an Electronic Wallet that also doubles as a position locator and compass that you can have a conversation. Throw in the capability of making phone calls and you basically have a new class of device, the flip phone smartphone!
