Samsung is finally going to launch an update to a
very strange but clearly popular smartphone in China!
The Smartphone that's being re-launched is the
Samsung Galaxy Folder 2, which is basically a flip phone smartphone as noted in
the article “Samsung
Galaxy Folder 2 is official, launches in China first”, published 08
September 2016 by Vince, GSM Arena.
This is a follow on to the Samsung Galaxy Folder launched in Q4 of 2013 as noted in my blog article entitled “Samsung launches a third flip Feature smartphone, the SM-W2014”.
Admittedly, I've not been keeping up much with this
trend, as I thought it was a Chinese-only smartphone trend that would probably
not go beyond China.
I'd hoped the Motorola Razr making a comeback would
re-ignite the love for feature rich flip phones being as it runs on android as
predicted in my MICO Wars
blog article entitled “How
Motorola Razr making an Android comeback at Lenovo Tech World”.
However, the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Folder 2
implies that I’m kinda right; the Samsung Galaxy Folder is still a China-only
trend. But can it go global with the coming of 5G?
Samsung
Galaxy Folder 2 - Toy Android Flip smartphone phone with kiddie specs
The Samsung Galaxy Folder 2, which measures 122 x
60.2 x 15.4mm and weights 160 grams, consists of two 3.8" WVGA resolution
displays folded into the shape of a traditional clam-shell flip phone.
This is the only way in which this smarpthone resembles a regular flip phone, as its specs speak otherwise. It runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow on a 1.4GHz quad-core CPU with a Snapdragon 425 chipset and 2GB of RAM.
Its measly 16Gb storage is expanded using a microSD
Card, hopefully the 256GB UFS that Samsung has been touting since July 2016 as
reported in my MICO Wars
blog article entitled “Samsung’s
UFS microSD card Socket may appear in the Samsung Galaxy S7”.
The Samsung Galaxy Folder 2 camera game is somewhat
weak; only an 8 Megapixel camera with LED flash and a 5 Megapixel front-facing
camera. So too is the battery; 1,950mAh
rated at 318 hours of standby.
Fuchsia
OS and 5G Networks - Trend towards More Features in a smaller device
Clearly, this smartphone is really taking advantage
of the nostalgia over the flip smartphones being touted by Celebrities in the
US of A as noted in my blog article
entitled “How
Celebrities Return of the Flip Phones Herald Smaller Smartphones and Smartwatch
phones”.
Still, it would be interesting if all feature
smartphone and flip phones went Android or even Fushcia OS predicted to rise in
2017 as prophesied in my Geezam blog article
entitled “Google’s Fuchsia OS to kill
Chrome, Android for Women 5G IoT Apps in 2017”.
Such feature rich feature smartphone would be
perfect for 5G Networks, especially if paired with Mesh Networks such as
Firechat, the future of Telecoms Networks as declared in my blog article
entitled “How
FireChat, 5G and Li-Fi means Free Voice or Data Services Network by 2020”.
Feature phone may yet again rise, but this time
powered by Google’s Fuchsia OS when 5G Networks rolls out in 2020.
