Ever since the purchase of WhatsApp by Facebook for a nice tidy sum of US$19
billion, MagicJack has been riding a wave on the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange)
as their business models are similar as noted in “Facebook-WhatsApp
Deal Has MagicJack CEO Talking Billions”, published Mar 19, 2014 4:11 PM ET
By Gabrielle Coppola, Bloomberg.
For most Jamaicans, MagicJack is synonymous with Low-Cost International
Calling for a yearly fee of US$29.99. However, since September 2011, Magicjack
has had free Calling to any USA or Canadian Landline and Mobile Number via a
handy app as described in “MagicJack
app brings totally free calling to iOS”, published September 30, 2011 11:59
AM PDT by Rick Broida, CNET News.
Sorta like Google Voice did at one time as noted in my blog article
entitled “Google
and Google Voice - The World is Not Enough”, the app is call Free Calls
with Magicjack.
Being as that article is a bit dated, I’ve decided to do an update. With
Free Calling in the air from the uber-popular WhatsApp by the start of Summer
2014 as stated in my blog article
entitled “WhatsApp
VoIP Calling in Second Quarter of 2014 - WhatsApp kills International Calling
at the Advent of Facetime-eqsue Premium Video VoIP Calling on smartphones”,
I began wondering if MagicJack had made the move to the Mobile Computing World.
Apparently they have, as MagicJack now has a free call Free Calls with
Magicjack that give us here in Jamaica absolutely free Calling to any USA or
Canadian Landline and Mobile Number for Google Android. Free Calls with
Magicjack is on the Google Play
Store as well as Apple
iTunes Store.
Skype already offers Free Calling, with their latest offer allowing you
to make Skype Calls from your Browser without having to install Skype, just as
Web Browser Extension as described in my Geezam
blog article entitled “Skype-ing
from your Browser now possible as WhatsApp conspires to kill International
Calling”. Only a Matter of Time before they offer an option to Call
Landlines and Mobile Numbers directly.
Calling traditional Landline and Mobile Numbers is a service Japanese SIP
(Session Initiated Protocol)-based VoIP Platform Line already offers, which
allows Voice Calls to Landline and Mobile numbers in the US of A and Canada for
about US$0.02 per minute as noted in my blog article entitled
“Japanese
Line introduces Line Call for Landline and Mobile - US$0.02 per Call and Kawaii
Stickers a plus as WhatsApp and Skype get company in making International Calling
and Roaming Extinct”.
Albeit this isn’t a full blown professional Package, for Jamaicans now
warming up to smartphones as stated in my blog article
entitled “Jamaicans
fall in love with Digicel's DL600 and DL700 during Christmas 2013 - Sub-US$100
smartphones driving rapid smartphone adoption in Jamaica as Manufacturing is
Possible”, anything free is welcome given the high cost of International
Calling in the First Place.
