“The new smart glass to be introduced by Samsung is a new concept of
wearable device that can lead to an exciting culture of communication. The
smart glass will present our aim to lead the new market with proven capability.
Wearable devices can't generate profits immediately. Steady releases of devices
are showing our firm commitment as a leader in new markets.”
Samsung official speaking on the
condition of anonymity to the Korea Times
Look like Samsung isn’t content with Galaxy Gear smartwatch in the
wearable arena, especially as it’s not being received well by the public due to
its limitations as stated in my blog
article entitled “Samsung
Galaxy Gear was not all that it promised - Wearable Computing Renaissance and
smartphone and Tablet Extinction once improved”.
They’ve also got an eye on Google Glass with plans for their very own
Galaxy Glass as stated in the article “Samsung
eyes smart glasses for later this year, claims report”, published January
27, 2014 7:52 AM PST by Lance Whitney, CNET
News.
This news leaked from Korea Times suggests that this is in the pipeline
and that we’ll soon know by the time the IFA 2014 Technology Trade show comes
about on Friday September 10th 2014. Their report was based on
interviews with anonymous Samsung officials who proclaimed the coming of a
Google Glass competitor called Samsung Galaxy Glass as noted in “Firms
turning to 'smart glasses'”, published 2014-01-26 16:27 By Kim Yoo-chul, Korea Times.
The Korea Times further stated those departments within Samsung are
working collaboratively to outfit Google Glass with HUD (Heads up Display) that
would basically result in a pair of customized eyewear that can function as a
synchable Glass for their smartphone line.
This claim by Korea times isn't easily dismissed though, as Samsung had
filed a patent claim in October 2013 for designs for a Wearable pair of
eyeglasses with bone-conducting headphones that allowed the wearer to listen to
music and receive calls as reported by the Walls Street Journal in “Patent
Filing Shows Samsung Preps Electronic Eyewear”, published Oct 24, 2013 4:01
am, by Min-Jeong Lee, Wall Street Journal.
Additionally, in the month following the patent filing at the Analyst Day
in November 2013, Samsung Vice Chairman and CEO Kwon Oh-hyun announced that
Samsung was pushing into wearables as a viable arena The Journal, who had
reported on this event, said that Samsung had showed slides that suggested the
synchable Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch would be paired with a set of
Eyeglasses as stated in “Look
out, Google Glass: Samsung eyeing wearable technology”, published November
6, 2013 5:18 AM PST by Don Reisinger, CNET News.
Could that be the Samsung Galaxy Glass? And if so, will Samsung be
completely replacing the smartphone with a smartphone with a Glasses form
factor? Effectively killing the Smartphone as I had predicted in my blog article
entitled “Google
Glass Designer Isabelle Olsson puts Leopard frames on Google Glass - Smart +
Sexy = Smexy glasses Katy Perry Roar for Tablet and smartphone Extinction”.
Samsung better move fast, as Google Glass had begun to make their Glass
product available via an American Optometrist, VSP Global, when American go to
fill their prescriptions for Glasses as noted last year in my blog article
entitled “Google
Glass partners VSP Global to make them more fashionable and thus mainstream - A
perfect replacement for the Smartphone that’ll see many Americans Frozen
staring in space”.
