Ubuntu
launched their Ubuntu Snappy Core for IoT (Internet of Things) development as
noted in my blog
article entitled “Ubuntu
Snappy Core for IoT – Why Ubuntu is excellent for Girls Who Code Developing
Drones and Robots for IoT”.
Now
they're getting ready to debut their first Ubuntu smartphone, the BQ Aquaris
E4.5 Ubuntu Edition at MWC (Mobile World Congress) that starts on Monday March
2nd 2015 and runs until Thursday March 6th 2015 as stated in the article “First
Ubuntu phone will be sold in a limited-run flash sale”, published February
6, 2015 6:35 AM PST by Rich Trenholm, CNET
News.
Made
by Spanish manufacturer BQ and Chinese company Meizu, the BQ Aquaris E4.5
Ubuntu Edition to be sold in a series of Flash sales on Tuesday 10 February
2015 in Europe for US$169.90 as noted in the article “The
Ubuntu phone is real and going on sale next week”, on February 6, 2015
09:30 am By Vlad Savov, The Verge.
This
a strategy of Flash sales, where sales are announced suddenly and only last a
few hours, sometimes minutes, is similar to the one employed by Chinese
smartphone maker Xiaomi as noted in my blog article entitled
“Xiaomi
in India after success in China - Xiaomi Looks to the West as the World is
theirs for the Taking”.
Sorry
Americans, but no plans for an American launch as yet, as after all, Ubuntu is
British! Coming out in all its unlocked glory, there'll be SIM (Subscribed
Identification Modules) bundles with the following Telecom Providers that have
partnered with Canonical:
1. Portugal
Telecom
2. GiffGaff
in the UK
3. Three
in Sweden
4. Amena
in Spain
So
what can our European cousins expect on Tuesday 10 February 2015? An Open
Source extravaganza!
US$169.90 BQ Aquaris
E4.5 Ubuntu Edition - How Ubuntu, Tizen and Firefox OS will unseat Google
Android with Pure Open Source Goodness
Developed
by British company Canonical, the BQ
Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition originally made its debut back at MWC 2014 where Canonical
CEO Mark Shuttleworth promised a Fourth Quarter of 2014 debut as noted in the
article “First
Ubuntu phones go on sale in fall, Mark Shuttleworth reveals”, published 26
February 2014 6:17 pm GMT by Rich Trenholm, CNET
News.
It's
certainly come a long way since MWC 2013 along with Tizen OS and FireFox OS as
stated in my blog
article entitled “MWC
2013 reveals Firefox OS & Tizen OS launching Second & Third Quarter
2013 respectively - Samsung's Despicable Me 2 & Mozilla practices The ABC's
of Death”.
Now
some two (2) years later, Samsung is finally launching Tizen OS in India in
January 2015 to counter the advances of Google Android One and Xiaomi as noted
in my blog
article entitled “US$90
Samsung Z1 Launches in India - Xiaomi Redmi and Google Android One competition
with Tizen OS and Samsung Galaxy S5 stylings”.
The Mozilla Foundation, touting their Firefox OS, has finally cemented their deal with Panasonic that was announced at CES 2014 involving Firefox OS being used in their HDTV's and other appliances as noted in my blog article entitled “Panasonic and Mozilla Foundation form Partnership to bring Firefox OS to Smart TV's - Big boost for Open Web and HTML 5 Platforms making Firefox OS a possible Google Chrome OS Competitor”.
This
as they're not the official Operating System for Panasonic's Viera line of 4K
UHDTV's as reported in the article “Panasonic
Taps Firefox OS for Its 4K TV”, published Jan 7, 2015 5:49 pm ET, the Wall
Street Journal and “Firefox
OS gives Panasonic TVs the makeover they desperately needed”, published
January 7, 2015 01:41 pm By Chris Welch, The
Verge.
Great expectations from
Ubuntu OS – True Open Source with HTML5 Support and Google Android Porting for
Developers
I
expect great things from these three (3) musketeers in the smartphone OS world.
After
all, with support for more LiMo (Linux Mobile) which is true Open Source and
porting web-friendly HTML5 based programs, they'll at least be able to run
Google Android Apps for the moment of launch.
Maintained
by the Open Source Community, Ubuntu OS will be more robust and guarantee
Developer interest avoiding the fragmentation-laden problems of Google Android,
such as security flaws that they refuse to fix so as to force people to upgrade
to their latest OS, Google Android 5.0 Lollipop as predicted in my blog article
entitled “Android
Browser Security unfixed as Google Wants you to Upgrade to Lollipop”.
Folks,
can't wait until Tuesday 10 February 2015
