“There is a university (Northern Caribbean
University) close by, we have high schools, we have excellent human resources
available to enable the area to become an ICT major point as we have seen in
Montego Bay and elsewhere”.
Minister of Science,
Technology Energy and Mining Phillip Paulwell during a tour of the ICT Center
on Ward Avenue in Mandeville which is being built by Sutherland Global
Sutherland Global is
coming to Mandeville and New Kingston folks!
That’s
something for Call Center Agents peeps working at ACCENT Marketing, Xerox or
FullGram Solutions to get VERY excited about and is far more exciting than this
cute furry French Angora Rabbit shown below!
Sutherland Global is said
to be the principal investor behind an ICT Center on Ward Avenue in Mandeville
as stated in the article “Paulwell
hails ICT project in Mandeville” published Monday, October 06, 2014, The Jamaica Observer.
This
News comes on the heels of yet another Call Center under construction in
Portmore jointly by the UCC (University College of the Caribbean) and Property Developer
Gordon Tewani worth some US$5 million as reported in my blog article
entitled “How
to find work in Jamaica at Call Centers - US$5-million Call Center in Portmore
jointly being built by UCC and Property Developer Gordon Tewani”.
This
was revealed my none other than Minister of Science, Technology Energy and
Mining Phillip Paulwell during the tour of a large ICT (Information and
Computer Technology) Center being built on Ward Avenue in Mandeille as shown in
the pictures below.
More
interestingly, this 70,000 sq ft ICT center seems to have Sutherland Global as its
main investor, the VERY SAME Sutherland
Global that employs UWI (University of
the West Indies) Students as stated in my blog article
entitled “How
to find work in Jamaica at Call Centers - Sutherland Global Service is now
hiring Full-Time Customer Care Consultants to work at the Mona Technology Park
as Christmas draws nigh”.
Sutherland Global in
New Kingston and Mandeville – Call Center expanding thanks to DBJ
Word
from my Call Center peeps in New Kingston is that they’ve purchased the old
CLARO Building on 34-36 Knutsford Boulevard in New Kingston and are currently renovating
most of the floors to be used as a Call Center.
It
possibly owned by Cari-MED CEO Glen Christian as stated in the article “Cari-Med
Owner Grabs Claro Building - Proven Loses Out On Deal For Prime New Kingston
Asset”, Published Wednesday April 23, 2014, The Jamaica Gleaner, who may have leased
the space to Sutherland
Global.
At
the rate of construction, both of which are part of the eight (8) Call Centers funded
by a US$33 million loan facility available through a Development Bank of
Jamaica (DBJ) as pointed out in my blog article
entitled “How
to find work in Jamaica at Call Centers - 8000 Jobs coming after US$33 million
Loan from DGJ floated for 8 Call Centers”, operations are expected to begin
at the ICT Center in Mandeville by about January 2015 and at the New Kingston
Center by December 2014.
Once
finished, it'll not only make them the second largest Call center next to
ACCENT Marketing in New Kingston but also mean that they also join ADV
Communications who are located in the Towers on Dominica Drive as pointed out
in my blog
article entitled “How
to find work in Jamaica at Call Centers - ADV Communications is a New Call
Center Coming to The Towers on Dominica Drive in New Kingston” as the third
Call Center to move to New Kingston area!
Strength
in numbers people, as the Call Center population is growing in the New Kingston
area. It is strengthened by the recent passage of the flex-work week bill which
has been sent through the house of Representatives and is now on its way to the
Senate for the final deciding Vote that'll officially usher it in as noted in
my blog article
entitled “Flexi-work
Bill sent to Senate without opposition – JLP singing praises as historic
occasion as Telecommuting Workplace now Possible”.
Thus
it's not totally inconceivable that they may soon be employing College Students
from the Golden Triangle area i.e. St. Josephs' Teacher College, Excelsior
Community College, Edna Manley School for the Visual Arts and my own MICO College
University.
Similarly,
in Mandeville, Sutherland
Global new building on Ward Avenue in Mandeville is estimated to have some
6000 seats. This means with a three shift system may employ as many as 20,000
persons, particularly college Students from NCU
(Northern Caribbean University) in Mandeville.
Sutherland Global in Mandeville
- NCU Students can now work in Call Centers like UWI Students
For
those in Mandeville excited about this development but worried about the effect
of Water shortages on a Call Center, not to worry folks. According to Site
Manager Peter Fong of Black Brothers the building is packing a large water
storage tank in case water goes away, which is a frequent occurrence in Mandeville.
