Being
as I repair computers, even Laptop Chargers, I’ve seem all kind of Laptop
Chargers and wondered “why is there no common standard for Laptop Chargers?”
So
it was refreshing to see yet another Kickstarter company, Finsix at CES
(Computer Electronics Show) 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada take a stab at the Universal
Laptop charger market with the Finsix Dart
Universal Laptop Charger as described in the article “The
Finsix Dart wants to replace your bulky laptop charger”, published January
6, 2015 7:21 PM PST by Nate Ralph, CNET News.
This
product originally started out as a Finsix
Dart kickstarter that was successfully raised some US$456,114 from 4,279
backers by Wednesday May 14th 2014, beating their initial goal of
JAUS$100,000.
The
Finsix Dart Universal Laptop Charger retails
for US$89 and is available on pre-order for shipment by February 2015 with the latest
shipment date being in May 2015.
Now
at CES 2015, it had all the trimmings of a finished and polished product that’s
billed as the world’s smallest Laptop charger as noted in the article “The
'world's smallest' laptop adapter debuts on Kickstarter for $79”, published
April 14th 2014 at 9:30 am by Richard Lai, Engadget.
This
is the closest thing to a Universal Laptop Charger and might eventually
incorporate the standards soon to be created by the Swiss Technical Standards
Body, the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) as reported in my blog article
entitled “Swiss
Technical Standards Body IEC developing Universal Laptop Charger specs for
early 2014 - Post-Analog Power Cord and Power Adaptor Era should focus on Waste
Energy Recycling”.
So
what’s so special about the Finsix Dart Universal
Laptop Charger? Not much, really……. Despite the successful kickstarter!
US$89 Finsix Dart –
Smallest Laptop Charger to be replaced by Ubeam Ultrasonic Power Transfer
The
Power output specs of the Finsix Dart as
follows:
1. Power:
65W
2. Voltage:
18 to 21V
3. Adaptor
Support: all Laptop Models except Apple MacBooks and Microsoft surface Tablets
4. Features:
2.1 Amp USB for charging other devices
Still,
if it doesn't support your Laptop and you happen to have the old Laptop Charger
handy, you can get the Finsix Dart for
only US$89, splice off the connector head or source the connector from your
local electronics store and build an extension to connect to your Laptop.
To
be honest it’s a little expensive for a Universal Laptop charger, which you can
easily purchase for as little as US$13 on Amazon as in the case of the SunValleyTek
Universal Laptop Charger.
I
guess you're paying for the compact size and not have to carry around multiple
chargers, as the Finsix Dart Universal Laptop
Charger can charge your Laptop, smartphone and Tablet. Still, this is really
not a Universal Laptop Charger based on universally accepted Laptop Power standards
as the Swiss Technical Standards Body, the IEC is seeking to achieve.
Possibly
by the end of this year, Ubeam's Ultrasonic Power Transfer product may kill off
the need for Laptop Chargers and the motley
crue of other charger altogether ass predicted in my blog article
entitled “Meredith
Perry's Ubeam Ultrasonic Power Transfer and the Venture Capitalists - Ubeam's
Wireless Charging Future is a Good Vibration with a Magnetic Personality”.
Until
then, the US$89 Finsix Dart can hold the
title of being the smallest Laptop Charger in the World a little longer.....
