Folks,
there is a developing trend towards BYOD in Jamaica. What that means is that
aside from Video Games, Enterprise and Corporate Apps for businesses will
increasingly become important in this Developing World country called Jamaica. Jamaica
Developers of Enterprise and Corporate Apps for Business will be in demand by
2017.
However,
there’s a problem; Developers prefer to make Games for Google Android or Apple
iOS for customers than for Enterprise and Corporate clients, as they’re very
demanding as it relates to security as concluded in my blog article
entitled “Vision
Mobile’s 10,000 Developer Global Study – Why Developers prefer developing for
Android and Apple iOS yet Enterprise makes Steady Money”.
Despite
many thinking I’m a Luddite based on my blog article
entitled “The
Reason why I don't like Smartphones - Location Privacy and How to disable
Location Services on Android and iOS”, I do realize that if Security is
important to me, then it’s important to Corporate Executives in Jamaica.
This
hacking of the Blackphone as explained in my blog article
entitled “How
to Hack ANY Blackberry or Smartphone - SGP Technologies survived in the Lion’s
Den as Blackphone Hack was cover for Blackberry Baseband Hack” exposes the
fact that Google Android OS just isn’t ready for use by Enterprise and Corporate
clients, as it’s security isn’t up to Blackberry Snuff.
It
also shows how hard it is for smartphone or Tablet or even a Developer of
Mobile phone OS or Apps such as those people who make Android Launchers as
described in my Geezam blog article
entitled “How
to change your smartphone Home Screen and create a Personal Assistant using
Android Launchers” to make Smartphones and Apps that are secure enough for
Enterprise and Corporate users to utilize.
Then
again….possibly having a pre-existing relationship with Enterprise and
Corporate clients helps as I’ll demonstrate in the next few paragraphs. One
company comes to mind…….
Apple and IBM - IBM
MobileFirst for iOS a play for lucrative Enterprise and Corporate clients
The
example I’m going to draw for is Apple and IBM (International Business
Machines).
Apple
realizes that security is still a big concern of Enterprise and Corporate
clients, especially as they'd once dabble in Blackberry's former playpen with
their Apple X Server Systems. They currently have no products tailored specifically
for Enterprise and Corporate.
Unless
of course if you count their Microsoft Office on the Apple iPad and Apple
iPhone as noted in my Geezam blog article
entitled “Microsoft
to introduce Office to Apple iPad on Thursday March 27th 2014”. At least,
up until July 2014 they didn’t!
Since
then, Apple has been going back into the Enterprise and Corporate markets by
teaming up with IBM to make IBM
MobileFirst for iOS, as reported in my blog article
entitled “Microsoft
and IBM for IBM MobileFirst for iOS – How Apple with IBM Cloud Computing
indicates Apple-Microsoft-IBM-Google Deal Possible in the Future”.
IBM MobileFirst for iOS is a
suite of Cloud-based application that leverage the secure Apple iOS Platform to
deliver IBM Cloud Computing Prowess to help Corporate and Enterprise Companies
work wherever, whenever
Apple
figures that their secure iOS platform, albeit not as locked down and secure as
the Blackberry, is secure enough to attract Enterprise and Corporate clients
who are now enamored by the trend towards BYOD (Bring Your Own Device).
In
that process, they’ll breathe life into their Apple iPhone and Apple iPad,
their two main money makers that are slowly losing marketshare globally to
cheaper smartphones and Tablets from China as noted in my blog article
entitled “IDC
Stats for Second Quarter of 2014 points to Asian Smartphone Rise – How cheaper
smartphones are slowly killing BOTH Apple and Samsung marketshare”.
Apps for Enterprise and
Corporate Clients – Jamaican Devs are clearly into Video Games
Even
here in Jamaica in the Developing World, there is a lack of Developers of
Smartphone and Tablets Apps for Enterprise and Corporate. The few Developers
that are in Jamaica are doing Video Games. Once such Developer Group is Working Enigma that's based out of
UTECH (University of Technology) as detailed in the article “Enigmatic
techies to create jobs through app development”, Published Sunday August 3,
2014 by Andrew Harris, Gleaner Writer, The
Jamaica Gleaner.
Working
Enigma was co-founded by Kadeem Heywood and is mainly focused on developing Video
Games, having published Pan Chicken Dash
and their most recent Game, Lef Mi Farm,
which is a play on the problem of Praedial Larceny in Jamaica.
Another
Developer Group, Team NewAge that's
based out of the UCC (University College of the Caribbean) is comprised of a
two-man NewAge Developer Team Orane
Campbell and Nicholas Brown as explained in “Ja
team seeks US$120,000 in pitch to Microsoft judges”, published Friday,
August 01, 2014 BY STEVEN JACKSON
Business reporter, The Jamaica
Observer.
They
too are making Video Games, namely Jungle
Escape and Project Exit. Like
the Working Enigma Developer Group, they're been to Digital Jam 3.0 and are now
seeking funding to enter the Regional Microsoft Imagine Cup in September 2014.
And clearly, they're NOT into making Apps for Enterprise and Corporate Clients.
Look
like my blogging schedule is booked out for September 2014!
Telecom and BYOD –
Local App Developers for Enterprise and Corporate Clients
Local
Telecom Provider Columbus Communications, parent of FLOW Jamaica, is taking
advantage of this BYOD Trend that’s been about for some time with their offer
of secure Platforms to make it work as noted in my Geezam blog article entitled “Columbus
Communications expects BYOD boost for Cloud Computing”.
It’s
getting additional focus because of the prevalence of Tablets, smartphones and
the trend for Enterprise and Corporate Clients to allow their Managers to work
in an always connected Environment using Broadband Internet. Especially as 4G
LTE (Long Term Evolution) is to be launched in the next 18 months counting from
April 2014 as stated in my blog article
entitled “Digicel
and LIME's 4G LTE Adoption in Jamaica – Budget Tablets with Microsoft
Productivity Software spark Wireless Broadband Revolution”.
They've
even thrown in the idea of Cloud Telephony with their offer of Hosted PBX
(Private Branch Exchange) as noted in my blog article entitled
“FLOW
rolls out Hosted PBX - How 100 MBs FLOW Ultra can power a Private WiMaX
Community Network”.
FLOW
also has Cloud Storage as noted in my Geezam
blog article entitled “Digicel’s Cloud
Backup Services – A deep Analysis”.
So does Telecom Provider Digicel, which it hopes to use as leverage to
woo Enterprise and Corporate clients both in Jamaica and internationally to use
their competitively priced Cloud Based Solutions as noted in my blog article
entitled “Digicel’s
Fiber Optic Network has July 2014 Completion Date – Launchpad for 4G LTE, Frame
Relay, FTTH and Cloud Based PBX Services”.
So
clearly what’s now needed in Jamaica and the rest of the World: Developers for
more Enterprise and Corporate Apps. The trend towards BYOD means that aside
from Video Games, Enterprise and Corporate Apps for businesses will
increasingly become important in this Developing World country called Jamaica.
